Sorry if this is a repost, I haven't seen it posted before...

Consumer Reports has released it's Top 11 Worst Cars list. The KK is third.
http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/aut ... ars/3.html

Interesting to note, also, is the Wrangler JK is #1, the Nitro is #5, and the Patriot is #9. And we've considered 6 of the vehicles on the list as a replacement for our Escape. You can guess what I think of Consumer Reports.

Slap a Toyota emblem on them and they would be the top picks  .

Though the Wrangler(CJ's,YJ's,TJ's,and now the JK's) have always been on the worst list since they are pitted against SUV's that are cuchy and wouldn't last 2 seconds on a dirt road.Don't read and consumer reports or ant other reports and you'll do better.

i read that a couple days ago and it really made me mad. notice that they have to put a freakin disclaimer on the first 3 entries saying that they are really good off-road and thats why everything else suffers, but their test doesnt take that into account...

when you notice that your test yields the first three results that are exceptions and need disclaimers... maybe there is something wrong with the test??!!

I didn't look at the article THAT closely, so let me know if I'm misstating something, but how can a Jeep be compared to the average car anyway? I'd love to see an Accord or a Camry follow my Liberty around off-road - or even on-road when the weather gets really nasty.

Rate Jeeps against SUVs and not cars. I forget if I saw any pickups on that list of "10 Worst". If not, why not? BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT CARS, that's why! How any respectable magazine can have an Accord and a Hummer and a Wrangler in the same category is beyond me!

Well just look how stupid this is......

Score: 27
Highs: Off-road ability
Lows: Fuel economy, noise, agility, fit and finish
Like the Wrangler and H3, the Liberty is credited with good off-road capabilities, but that does not factor in to the final score.

They rated high for off-road ability and the low was agility?? Sheeez.......

I don't know but ours isn't noisy and the fit and finish is spot on.......

I'm surprised that they ranked the FJC so low. I mean, it has a Toyota badge, right? I thought that all it took to get a recommendation from CR is to be made by Toyota or Honda. I have a Toyota ('06 Tacoma) and I love it. But CR certainly had nothing to do with my buying it. It was more like, "Well, they're not going to make the Gladiator, so what mid-size truck doesn't totally suck."

Edit: Not sure what I was thinking when I typed "not going to make the Commander."

They are being politically correct and bashing anything that goes off road-- so they can sell magazines to the hippies. They already know that Jeepers are not going to take their tests seriously, so they have to find an easy (vehicle ignorant) demographic for them to appeal to.

As far as I'm concerned the KK is in a class by itself. What other vehicle that size can get 20mpg on the highway(real numbers) and be able to tow 5k. None! The Highlander, CRV, Mazda and whatever else are all 3500lbs or less. Oh yeah and we love the inside of our KK.
Consumer reports has and always will !$%#$ sucking.

The 4Runner and the FJ Cruiser both average 20mpg and can tow 5000lbs. It's more like 19 city and 22 highway, real world. And they're both as capable as a KJ or KK. The 4Runner suffers in turning radius and is a little to posh for my tastes, and the FJC is too goofy looking, but all four of these vehicles are equally capable. The FJC is the best off-roader of the bunch stock, but still it's a close call between all four. The Toyotas, though, get better gas mileage and have much more get up & go. The drivetrain in the KJ/KK is always described as "adequate, but nothing exciting." I'll vouch for this. My '06 KJ Renegade is kinda wimpy both on acceleration to highway speed and on torque. I blame the auto tranny more than the engine. My 4.0L Tacoma feels like a race car compared to the KJ. The Tacoma gets 20mpg average. The KJ gets 16.5 average. I understand they re-programmed the tranny for the KK to improve torque and correct the shift points. They also increased mileage by decreasing rolling resistance, bettering aerodynamics, and through reprogramming the tranny.

Disclaimer - I love Jeeps and am new to Toyota stuff. I'm very happy with my Tacoma, but I still plan to replace the KJ with a KK once the phoenix engines are dropped into them in '10 or '11. I'm just trying to provide some objective feedback.

They cater to thier subscribers...and that is OK with me...they aren't the kind who would buy a Jeep anyway (with a few exceptions maybe)

if we all listened to CR, we'd all be driving the toyota prius. this is the same magazine that lead to the demise of the suzuki samurai. i say if youre thinking about a vehicle, get your butt up do your research on it, go drive it around, and make your decision

Did anyone else catch this?... This thread says that it is rated #3 in worst, and another thread says it is #3 in sales. Isn't that kinda odd. Just thought I would throw that out there.

I was considering the Tacoma or FJ before I bought my KJ. All were available in manual which was part of my criteria. The FJ sticker had 16/19MPG and I believe the Tacoma was (07) 19HWY with 6 speed. KJ sticker was 18/23. I believe both Toyotas had worse mileage with the manual transmissions. I have been getting 20 MPG average in the KJ. With gas at $3.30 that is a signifigant difference and favors for the Jeep.

Yes, it is worth noting that the 6 speed manual available in the Tacoma/4Runner/FJC mated to the 4.0L engine gets significantly worse mileage than the 5speed auto. It's quite strange, but it's true. So if you want a manual transmission, then the KJ/KK *will* outperform the Toyotas. If you want an auto, then the Toyotas will significantly outperform the Jeeps. Both my KJ and my Tacoma are autos. The KJ averages 15-16.5mpg, the Tacoma 20-21. These are real-world, every day driving numbers, mostly 40-45mph on hilly two-lane state routes.
