I know you Colorado guys don't think it ever snows in California, but it really does..

I'm a broadcast engineer and some of my transmitter sites are in some locations that get some pretty harsh weather... today was one of those days:

we had one site that was off the air, and another that had low power output, so I made a trip to the mountain to make some repairs..

who needs chains? All you need is all those electronic traction and stability controls, it worked great!

We did have to stop and take our tennies off and put on some more appropriate shoes though LOL

all fun things have to come to an end, this is when we made it back down to dry pavement. It was snowing pretty hard at the time, so I'm sure there will be a lot more snow up there tomorrow.

This trip was pretty cool...

When we got almost to the top of the mountain, we found a Pacific Gas & Electric truck stopped in the road. The PG&E guy came back to tell us that there was a power line down (one reason we were up there, our sites were on generator power), and to ask us if we knew which way the power lines came up the mountain.

About that time, I look up, and this person comes walking out of the woods. I'm like WTF? Where did this guy come from? The guy looks at me and says "Rick, is that you"?....

It was a friend/fellow broadcast engineer, his name is Paul. I haven't seen Paul in about 2 1/2 years. He has a 2003 Liberty that we used to talk about when I had my 04 Liberty.

Paul had been called out to work at one of the transmitter sites a lot earlier in the day. Apparently it was snowing very hard and he became disoriented and missed the turn to the gate to the transmitter sites. He ended up absolutely buried in deep snow that was above the hood of his Libby.

I kept teasing him and telling him that if he had an 08 that he wouldn't have gotten stuck like that... anyway, he had to be winched out, but made it back down the mountain safely.

Digger - yes, I'm still running the original Goodyear tires, they worked fine with no chains.

When I got to the snow, I stopped and put the KK in 4 wheel low range. Then, after a few feet, I realized that in low range, the ESP was disabled, so I stopped and put it in 4 wheel high range, so I could have the ESP and stuff. I was really impressed with it, no slipping and sliding at all, it worked great.

When we were coming back down the mountain... I stopped, put the KK in 4 wheel low, then put the transmission in neutral, turned on the HDC, and let off the brake. It worked fine, and I didn't hear that noise again, but I didn't acellerate either. I'll try it again next time, and try acellerating and see if I hear the anti-lock brakes engage. I'm pretty sure that's what was going on last time.

Can you imagine driving down that mountain, transmission in neutral, no feet on the brakes? It was different, but worked really good. All you have to do is steer, no braking required.

Great stuff! I love snow pictures. It's cool that you have a job that lets you ride your KJ in scenery like that. Thanks for posting those!
