| Post subject: | Just a Hitch/wiring??? |
I didnt get the towing option on my kk, but can't i just add a hitch and wiring to it? I am new to the whole option of towing. the word itself still scares me. I had a car before, and towing usually meant that i was sitting on the side of the road. lol. yes i have used other vehicles to tow boats before, but never my own vehicle. any suggestions? |

Hey there, the tow package contains a lot more equipment then the hitch and the wiring. It has 2 very important items, which are the transmission cooler and the power steering cooler. Also, it gives you the trailer sway control which is built in with the esp. I guess just like in boating when they say you should buy your second boat first, that also applies to Jeeps. P.S. I should have gotten a 4x4. |

yep I had them install a aftermarket hitch at the dealership. I would suggest at least installing the mopar hitch harness for a clean install. It is true that the towing package has an extra transmission cooler and anti-sway control. The transmission cooler is no big deal since I can get a universal cooler from your F.L.A.P.S. for about $80 but the anti-sway control can only be programmed from the factory. |

It is the 4x4. sport actually. I just didnt really have a choice on options when I got it. I had to get a lease. (don't ask) but I am fairly sure that there is at least one secondary cooler on the front end, down near the bottom of the radiator. I was just wondering about how much it would cost me to have everything installed by a pro. PS: F.L.A.P.S.??? |

PS: F.L.A.P.S.??? That cooler in the lower grill is for power steering... all KKs have them. I also forgot to mention that the towing package includes a full sized spare, mechanical fan and a different fan shroud(aka HD cooling). By a pro I assuming your talking about a dealership. If you go with all Mopar material your looking at a pretty penny. I once asked my dealership about adding the different fan and cooler but I remember being too much money for me to drop at the time. I'd start by asking the parts department how much it would cost for everything included in the tow package. Then ask the service department how much to install said items. Heck you bought a vehicle from them... might as well give them something to do right? PS. Mine is a lease too, I understand where your comming from. PSS: F-favorite L-local A-auto P-parts S-store |

IDK, I just really don't know if I will be towing that much. If all else fails then maybe at a later date. Besides, with gas prices going up like they are. We probably wont be running the boat near as much this year. As far as the anti-sway... Isn't that kind of a joke. people have been towing without that for quite some time, and never had a fraction of the technology that we have now days. I can't really see the point in it. If you drive like you are supposed to, the only thing you have to worry about is the other people on the road.I used to live out in Bridgeport CA, Coleville actually, and being a cook in the Marines meant driving the half hour to work in whatever weather it decided to bring to us. Sometimes this included some serious snow. When you leave your house at 0300 to make it there by 0400 because the plows aren't out yet, it kinda forces you to be a better, more alert driver. |

In that case I would just get an aftermarket hitch and the mopar wiring harness. |

So, I got a little curious tonight, and grabbed the sales sticker out of the glove box. It says (according to Jeep) that standard equipment on this is an auxillary transmission Oil Cooler. It also says that I have the 3.73 gears and the p235/70r16 white letter tires. I guess with that trans cooler, I should be ok to do SOME towing right? as long as I get the rest of the setup? Keystone alum wheels. When did cheap beer companies start making wheels? lol jk. |

Keystone alum wheels. When did cheap beer companies start making wheels? lol jk. yeah you'll be ok to tow, plus its a lifetime warranty on the tranny right? On the wheels.... it might very well be made by a beer company. Check out my thread on my wheel damage http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=29232 |

it was about $220 for one wheel. I'll try to check the model number on my hitch when it gets out of the shop. |

Ok, just because i don't want to start another thread, Does anyone know if napa's tow hooks can mount to the KK? Because I saw some pics on here from someone else's tow hooks, and the jeep ones look like they have some sort of bracket on them. Do I need that, or is that already there? too muddy out to go check. |

Interesting fact. so, I went to the local Hitching Post today, someone told me that they could help with finding a hitch for the KK. (cheaper). ummm. Not so cheap, but not as bad as I was thinking. The wiring harness was not listed with a price. when he checked into it, he said it should be between 100 - 140 depending. He told me that alot of the newer SUV's are needing a power inverter in the wiring because the current tail light wiring cannot handle the power needed to utilize the extra capacity of the lights on a trailer... Does this not tell me that Jeep is using a cheap, lower grade wire for this Also, the hitch and wiring installed would be about 400. give or take. Dealership wants 130 for just the wiring, no instal, but there is a note in their book. that says it must be activated with dealer scan tool. WTF is that about Im thinking of having someone install the wiring, I can do the hitch. I just hate wiring in the interior. too much of a PITA. |
