Post subject:  Cutie in a KK

So, I'm sitting at Toro Regional Park during lunch today, and what pulls up beside me? A 2008 Black Libby Limited.. So, I kindly asked the cutie driver if she minded if I take a pic of her Libby for the website. I doubt she'll ever make it here, but she did teach me a few things:

1: The '08 (and maybe the later KJ models had this but mine was an '02 and didn't) will warn you around 3,000 miles that it's time for an oil change. After having said oil change you must reset the warning/timer. Apparently, she told me, the Jiffy Lube in Seaside (little city by us here) doesn't know how to do it... It's one of those "turn the key, hit the brake 3 times, turn the key on and off twice, etc.." kinda things. I'll dig into the owner's manual eventually to find it... If anyone knows more about this (or #'s 2 or 3), put up a post!!

2: The passenger seat has a weight sensor. If it detects a person sitting there over a certain weight (??) the airbag will enable. Otherwise it is disabled (a child/childseat are not enought weight to enable it). Also, if it detects a certain amount of weight and the seatbelt isn't fastened, you get the beep-O-rater, just like if the driver's seat doesn't have the seatbelt on. I have not tried driving with noone in the driver's seat yet...

3: The transmission will disengage (go to neutral) when you SLAM the brakes. I'm guessing this is due to the antilock feature so the brakes don't have to fight the transmission, especially when in 4x4 going down a slick snowy or dirt road... Just a guess..

Without further delay...

the airbag thing is called occupant classification system or OCS. it also features multistage airbags that determine if youre wearing a seatbelt and how close you are to the steering wheel and deploys the airbag accordingly

I had an 04 Liberty and it did not have the oil change warning, but my 08 does. The local Jeep dealer here in Merced has failed to reset it twice, saying they didn't realize that the Liberty needed to have the warning reset. I guess they are still learning about the Liberty.

Our local dealer here is a GM, Jeep dealer. The local Dodge-Chrysler dealer does not sell Jeeps. Sort of strange, huh? I guess the Chrysler dealer would be more used to the oil change warning and reset requirements, I'm sure the Nitro and other Chrysler/Dodge vehicles have the same thing.

The Liberty's have had the weight sense thing for a while. My 04 had it, and I know when my grandson sits in the passenger seat, the light comes on saying the airbag is disabled.

My 05 Limited has the oil change feature. It is controlled by the overhead console where you can set the miles for oil change. To set it back to zero miles you use the step button until oil change comes up then push and hold the reset button.

I keep reading number 3 transmission kicks in neutral when you slam on the brakes???
I HATE all this new computer crap anyways and looks like I will never ever buy a new KK with this junk on it, I don't need anyone to tell me when to change the oil, kick into neutral when I hit the brakes etc, can they not just make a vehicle with none of this stuff on it, no wonder the consumer is so stupid anymore, the car tells you what to do

I'm guessing that number 3 is an urban legend. That doesn't even make sense to do that, does it? If you slam on the brakes, why would you want the vehicle to shift to neutral. I know the new Liberty ABS system has rough road detection, but I don't know about it shifting to Neutral:

Anti-lock Brake System with Rough Road Detection: Anti-lock brake system capable of detecting if the vehicle is driving on a rough road by the oscillations in the wheel speed signals. Rough road is detected on off-road surfaces or trails and ABS enters a different pressure control, where it will hold the brake pressure for longer pulses. Because trails are usually a deformable surface (dirt or gravel), the surface will form a wedge in front of the tire and assist in slowing down the vehicle

Actually to get the oil change indicator to go off, you turn the key on press the accelerator pedal 3 times and turn the key off......

Hah, I had a few pics in which you could see her face better. I thought I'd be considerate and not post those.. Hehe, she may actually stop by this site..

To answer the other question, Central Coastal Cali...

oh come on...stop holding out on us.... and the neutral thing... i think its crap, an auto trans down shifts just like you would in a stick to provide extra drag in the driwve line to help slow you down

I'm not honestly sure... Let me check with the engineers...

The seatbelt bong will stop after a few minutes/miles if it detects weight on the passenger side. (thankfully!)

Yes, it is hit the accel pedal 3 times (shouldn't be surprising that my jeep dealer doesn't know how to do this now should it? )

A manual trans will definitely not jump into N when you nail the brakes good (or…mine won't).

And if you asked if you could put her picture (along with the libby) up and she said yes, why be coy? Slap it up.

Post subject:  Info on T-Case going to Neutral on HARD brake

Ok, I just heard back from my bro on this... It sounds exactly as I suspected.. 1 (key) difference though... It's NOT the Transmission switching to neutral, it's the T-case. It's actually exactly how she (the cutie) originally described it to me.. I just didn't recall the detail.. Also, this isn't his (my bro's) area of design so he's just educatedly guessing... Read for yourself...

"Steven,
I can check but the people in charge of the 4WD powertrain on the vehicle are out of the office for awhile on road trips. It is entirely possible that the T-case disengages (ie opens) during braking so that the wheels can be independently braked. ie - you wouldn't want the rears to lock up just because the fronts locked or vice versa. In order for ABS and ESP to do their job properly, the wheels need to be disconnected from each other. I don't think that the trans goes into Neutral - the Tcase may just open momentarily during aggressive braking. If the trans went to Neutral, the tach would drop to an idle which I'm sure it doesn't. To test it, put it in 1st at 30, 2nd at 50, etc and brake and watch the RPM. You will see the tach drop RPM gradually to idle while you stop. If it goes into Neutral, the tach will drop to an idle speed quickly..."

I'll update this if/when I hear back from the guys who designed the thing.. I also asked him if he has any detail on the SPECIFICS of how the tranny "programs" itself (by learning how you drive).. I'm wondering what "features" of shifting, etc. it can "learn"..

Regards,
~kk

Ok, I just heard back from my bro at DCX.. Regarding the possibility of the T-case or Tranny going to neutral during hard braking...

"Steven,
My friend that works on the KK Tcase just got back from his test trip where they were actually verifying the Tcase in Colorado.

He said the Tcase does not disengage during braking and the transmission does not go into Neutral. The Tcase will open up during some ESP events though. It has it's own self learn process where clutch pack volume is determined every time you switch from 2WD to 4WD (only 1 time during per ignition cycle).

As for the transmission learning schedules, I do not have a direct contact with that group but will ask them next time I talk to them. "

So it looks like braking alone won't put it in neutral.. So she must have either been mistaken, or she did something to activate the ESP or something... Anyway, that's all on that..

I've been trying to get the DETAIL on how the transmission "learns" your driving style. That is, exactly what is it learning and how does the logic of the computer program work..

I'll post if I hear back on it..

Just got back from a trrip to Tybee Island Ga and I was surprised going over the hills of PA when the transmission actually shifted down to keep my speed constant when going down hill. I have always before had to hit the brakes. It kept my speed constant. Quite impressed. To override it and get back the overdrive was just hitting the pedal.

My 99 grand cherokee (laredo) has the service interval timer in the console. You reset it from within it's menu.

Even though it turns out that the TC doesn't actually disengage during hard braking it's kinda interesting to note that the old Volvo C303 does the exact opposite; during hard braking in 2WD it locks the TC so that there is less chance of the front wheels locking up while the rears have not yet reached maximum braking potential.
This was long before ESP and even ABS however.
