Post subject:  08 Liberty Transmission Dipstick and Tranny fluid level

Ok... so I have been having the problems with the torq converter shudder and a brief jump or slip when driving on the freeway. The service at my local shop was not very eager to help at first. I questioned the fact that there was no trans dipstick. I was given the standard reply that no dipstick was available. I then asked what the interval that Jeep expected the fluid level to be checked... was told that it should be checked every oil change. He could not give me a solid answer on how Jeep expected me to do this when i plan on doing the oil changes myself.

What is the situation with this... he gave me some story that I would have to have a scan tool to verify fluid temps and other stuff in order to determine the fluid level... can anyone give any truth to this or is he giving me some BS as I expected.

Checking the fluid requires a special dipstick as well as a chart and the Diagnostic scan tool to read the transmission fluid temperature. The dipstick tool is measured off in 10mm increments and those increments refer to a specific temperature on the chart. If the temp and measurement do not match then fluid will either need to be added or removed.

As far as your shudder goes, have your dealership look at all of the tsb's out for the nitro as they have had the most problems with the 42rle trans

They did the same TSB that was performed the last time I had it in last month. So far, it seemed to be abit better this time around.

Why did they go this route with the tranny fluid check? This sucks. What do you recommend for just joe consumer like me who wants to do their own work? Granted, I don't want to spend tons of money on a scan tool. IF there any optional ways to get around this?

They did it so lube places don't put the wrong fluid in there.... as far as working on it, you have two options for dip sticks, jeep p/n 53013592AC or chrysler special tool 9336.... They both work the same and the jeep one is the cheapest. All you have to do is insert the rod down the tube till you hit the pan, and pull it back out and measure. as far as the temp goes, I have a chart the will give you the level vs temp. you would have to guess the temp but it is an option.

you are going to need a advanced scan tool that does more than pull codes. I have a 400 dollar one from MAC and it won't display values like that..
