Today while I was unhooking a small trailer from the Jeep, I unconciously heard the exhaust sound like it was cutting out. like a short stall/ stopped breathing kind of noise. I don't know what would cause this, other than maybe bad gas? Best guess. But, I don't know, has anyone heard this, or heard of this before on a KK. Is this one of those things I should be watching for? |

I have heard the sma thing. I really did not think much about it because my '03 dodge truck would do the same thing when idleing. I never had any problems from it, so I just overlook it. But the thought that it could be gas related has got me thinking. My KK has less than 5000 miles on it. I am running 87 in it as the book suggests. But I get a small spark knock when I take off. That never happened with the '03 truck, and I used the same octane from the same station! Now you have me thinking .....! |

I hear it ALL THE TIME, it sounds like the motor is going to shut off. I may hear it more because of my exhaust as well but it makes me feel better to know that others are experiencing it as well. I will tell you that one night I pulled up in my drive way put it in park, and my RPMs dropped to 1000, my lights went out, and everything shut off for about 2 seconds (even the motor).......then everything started back up again. Very strange. |

I had an 01 Isuzu Rodeo that the engine would ping like crazy unless I used premium gas. After several trips to the dealer, and the transmission going into some sort of weird limp mode everytime I tried to use the thing in 4 wheel low range, I traded it for an 04 Liberty. The 04 ran great, but didn't get very good fuel mileage, except on the highway. When the 04 was idling, it sould sound like it had a miss in the engine at times. However, if you gave it the slightest bit of acceleration, that would disappear and the engine ran very smooth. I traded the 04 in for an 08 Liberty. The 08 gets a lot better mileage, and I don't hear the miss at idle speeds, it's very smooth. The transmission in the 08 shifts way different than the 04 though. If you are getting on it a bit with a heavy foot, it's as if the engine shuts off for a split second while it shifts. It's not a problem, just a lot different than the 04 when it shifts. |

So, who has the money to willingly pay for premium to test if that is the problem? |

count me out, mine isn't pinging. However, if it pings constantly on regular gas, I would think the dealer could take care of the problem. |

My 02 and my cousin's 03 did the same thing.. so don't sweat it! I think its just a 3.7L thing. Come to think of it, our old 92 Dakota with the 3.9L did the same thing, as well. |

I've been using mid grade (91 octane) for the last 3k miles bc of my performance upgrades, and it's still doing it............ |

It must be lots of magnum engines that do that cause the 5.9l in my truck has a very rough idle, like what your describing, I thought that it might be because of the 87 octane so I switched it to premium gas and It went away. So far im not having the problem with my kk though. |

I've ony felt a "miss" a couple of times while accelerating from a dead stop. And that drop in rpm while idling... usually just the fuel injectors having a burp, or ignition going nuts for a second. If these two are not the issue, then timing is next. Anyway, i've been running 89 octane... no problems since. I honestly don't think we'll ever need 91 or 93 for these jeeps, unless someone comes out with a reputable chip for it. |
