Post subject:  MyGig question

does the MyGig Nav system have to have a DVD in the slot to operate? I've been really wanting a MyGig system for my Liberty, but.....

We bought a 2009 Scion XB yesterday. It has a Nav system in it, but we found it had a DVD in the DVD slot. When we took the DVD out, the NAV system no longer worked. When I looked at the DVD, it says it's the Nav Map DVD. The Nav started working again as soon as we put the DVD back in the slot.

Does the MyGig Nav system have to have a DVD in it also? That sort of bothered me a bit... what happens if you scratch or lose the Nav DVD? I know, I guess I should make a copy of it ASAP.

You would think that they could have the North America maps in non-volatile memory, like a hand held GPS. If you need to change it, plug in a zip drive.

other than that, the Scion XB is a pretty cool little wagon..

No, you don't need a DVD in the drive for it to work. The new RER MyGIG systems have the map data loaded on the built in hard drive, so there is no need for the DVD to read the map data.

Ok, thanks, I was hoping that was the way the MyGig worked. I'm still going to get one installed... well... as soon as I recover from buying the Scion XB   I don't understand why Toyota didn't put the maps in a non volatile memory, then update them either via DVD or via a USB port.

Oh well, the Scion is still a pretty cool little wagon. In fact, there's lots of things on it that Jeep could learn from.. like the A/C and the headlights. I've always complained about my headlights not being bright enough on my Liberty... the Scion has no problems in that area, in fact, the hi-beams are way bright, it's amazing.
