I've been traipsing around the "how to figure out dealer cost and dealer invoice" websites before I start shopping for real and i notice there are some comment posts about KK headlights not being so great. Not much light. Anybody know the scoop on this? Just low beams or high beams also? If it is true, is there a good fix?

I don't think they are an issue. I always have the fog lights on with my headlights, which helps a ton. I was amazed how much light the fogs put out. Running with just the normal headlights, they leave much to be desired. Flip on the fogs, and I have no complaints.

The high beams, suck. Mostly because the fog lights turn off when the high beams go on. I plan on adding after market lights to be used as my high beams.

The bulbs that are used are so so for brightness of light. The low beams and fog lamps are pretty close to being the same brightness, but the high beams just suck. The only fix is one, different bulbs, 2 an HID system, or three aux lights

That was my very first complaint about the KK, the headlights just plain suck. On low beam, there's not a lot of light up close to the vehicle. Turning the fog lights on helps, but why should you have to do that?

We bought a 2009 Scion XB this week. I commented to my wife that Jeep could learn a lot about headlights from Toyota. The low beams are great on the Scion, and the high beams are truely amazing.

I think I'll see what kind of bulbs the XB is using and see if I can put something similar in the KK. Hopefully, it's just the bulbs that's the problem and not the reflector.

I thought that the lights sucked pretty bad at first as well, my old p/u would light a MIGHTY stretch of road with just normal bulbs and the KK seemed a lot sadder.

After a bunch of saddle time though it seems to me that they're just shooting for something a little different. The lights are aimed relatively high and the beam is somewhat more diffuse, in the end I can see imperfections/problems in the roadway just maybe not as bright but my ability to pick out deer and elk even a surprising distance from the roadway is vastly improved. I do a lot of driving through wildlife country and the KK's lights are far and away better at spotting animals than any other vehicle I've been in.

In short: I've learned to deal, quite happily.

YMMV

Does anyone have (can you point me to) the dimensions of the 9008/H13 bulbs? I've done a lot of searches and can't come up with it. (I have, however, come up with the dimensions for the 9005 and 9006 bulbs. They are 55 mm from the lamp side of the metal base ring to the tip of the bulb. The dimension that makes the real difference, from the lamp side of the metal base to the center of the filament, is not shown.) Somebody mentioned somewhere "I hope it isn't the reflectors." Just an odd thought, and I'd hate to think this was true: If the reflectors were designed for a bulb with certain dimensions and then (for whatever reason like low bid or something) the bulb was changed to the 9008/H13 might that make a difference? BTW, I'm told by maxlumens@finemotoring.com that HIR bulbs to replace the 9008/H13's are not available. Only made to replace the 9005's and 9006's.

Not sure if you have used Silverstar before, but I find them to burnout very quickly . . . consistently very quickly.

I had the silverstars in my KJ for 3 years and never had a burnout. I replaced my Heads, fogs and turn signals and they lasted for 3 years...... I replaced my KK Heads & Fogs the day after I brought her home with SilverStars bc you guys are right, the lights JUST PLAIN SUCK. I LOVE the SilverStars. I just turned 10k miles and they are still going clean and strong, best $80 I've ever spent on lighting.....

Can the fog light mod be done on the KK as you can on the TJ and KJ's? Bend a tab and "wa la" fog lights stay on with high or low beams.
