Post subject:  Flashing MIL (check engine light)

So I had the PCM in my KK re-flashed in accordance with the torque shudder TSB. Now, when I turn the key to the ON position (but not actually start), the MIL remains lit for the lamp test... fine. But then it flashes for about 10 seconds before going solid again. It is not lit while the engine is running.

I looked in the owner's manual and it explains that:

"The MIL will flash for about 10 seconds and then return to being fully illuminated until you turn off the ignition key or start the engine. This means that your
vehicle’s OBD system is not ready and you should not proceed to the I/M station."

Then it says that:

"If your OBD system is not ready, you should see your authorized dealer or repair facility. If your vehicle was recently serviced or had a battery failure or replacement, you may need to do nothing more than drive your vehicle as you normally would in order for your OBD system to update. A recheck with the above test routine may then indicate that the system is now ready."

I'm going to take it in if the flashing continues after a couple of days, but how long should it take to update itself, if that's what it means? And what is it updating?

I love technology, especially electronics, but why the hell man put electronics in a mechanical device I really wonder sometimes...

P.S. does anyone know how to display the OBD II codes without using a reader? Also, a list of what the codes mean would be nice.

from the nitro forum

1. Enter car, shut door.
2. Put on the emergency brake and tranny in "Park"
3. Hold down trip button.
4. Turn key to "ON" position and let off the trip button.
5. You will get a light show along with dancing gauges!
6. Do not start the car, Once it is done running its system checks the gauge cluster will return to normal and you can be on your way!

just watch the two display panels and on if them will show a P0000 something code.

Once you find out, post it up and i'll look it up for you

Thanks Digger... I just tried that, the dancing gauges appear, all instrument cluster lights come on, but there's no Pxxxx code. There are a bunch of weird codes like L 60.5 and C 60.2 in the odometer display, but no Pxxxx.

If you have the key in the "on" position, with the engine not running, this is absolutely normal.

Now if the CEL is flashing while the engine is on

You are fubar.

Well, your dealer is, since it's under warranty

Awewome... Iguess I'll go to the dealership AGAIN. Oh, what's the CEL, I don't see any other lights on, so I must be OK.

Update:

I called the dealership today and the tech. that performed the re-flash said that all was OK. So I guess that's it for now. The trick with the odometer button that Digger posted did not uncover any Pxxx codes either, so that's probably another indication that all is well.

FYI - the 4WD works EXCELLENTLY in snow with stock tires - can't wait to throw on my snow tires in a couple of weeks when I get home to really improve sticking power.
