Post subject:  Idea for those wanting to powder coat their rims

I saw these plastic chrome wheel skins at a dealer and then found them on Ebay. They actually looked to fit pretty well on the 16" factory rim.

Here was my idea for those wanting black rims. Instead of going to the work and expense of having your factory rims powder coated and then run the risk of them chipping what if you where to take these skins and paint them?

The only trick is to figure out a way to prep them and/or remove the chrome plating off the plastic so you could get a good bond on the cover.
I called the place that sells them to ask if they had them available unplated but they don't.

The benefit would be you wouldn't ruin your rims if you changed your mind later, they would be cheap to replace if they did get damaged and they would look stock.

Any thoughts?

interesting product but i wonder how secure they are. I'd hate to have one come off and fly into another car.

Agreed... I'd be much more interested if they were held on with the lugs. But still something to consider...

We should ask them to simply manufacture them in black . . . I would think that we could convince them that overall, the jeep crowd would show more interest in black than in plastic chrome.

I am guessing they are made in China or somewhere.
The dealers like to install these on the base models to "dress them up" a little.
I suspect the few us on this forum wouldn't be enough to start up another production of them.

I did some research on removing chrome from plastic and the two products that many say works is Castrol Super Clean or just household bleach. In either case you would need to soak them for several hours or days to remove the plating.
I guess then you could spray them with a low gloss black out of a can.

Here is a reply from the company that sells them when I asked about how they are held on.

Hello,

These skins have a hidden clip system that holds them on your wheel very good. You can't see them and the end result is that your wheels will now look chrome. Your factory center will show through the opening. They look great. We just did our 1st Liberty with them yesterday. We also have a chrome grille for it. Let me know if your are interested.

Thank you,

Mark

Wonder what shipping's going to be like from Hong Kong during the holidays.. Oi. I suppose you could always just take sandpaper to the things, then prime and paint them again?

That Mark is from a retailer in Chicago. Suburban Wheel Cover is the name of their company. They are being shipped from Illinois so I bet you would have them pretty quick.
