Post subject:  defrost not covering the whole windshield

This is the first winter with my KK.
Has anyone else noticed the defrost not hitting the whole windshield when on? The ice on the outer edges of the windshield won't melt. I have never had a car have this problem.
It looks like the defrost vent is just not wide enough and enough air is not hitting the windshield.

Can you see out the windshield?

Yeah I noticed the same thing. When the temperature dipped down below 0 the other night, it was a pain in the arse to get that thing where my field of vision wasn't restricted by ice around the sides.

Same here . . . I had to blast it full bore for about 10 minutes and eventually it cleared, but definitely a design flaw.

I noticed it for the first time yesterday and it really got on my nerves. If I turn my defroster on wide open when I leave home it will clear my windshield about the time I'm trying to park at work.

yep its a common issue with the KK due to the poor design of the vents on the dash.

My KK does the same thing. I also had some type of clicking noise that went on during a snow storm with the heater. Brought it in it was an actuator. I also told them about cold air on my driving leg, they put insulation infront of the console.

I fired an e-mail off to Chrysler the other day only to be pretty much told sorry about my luck. You'd think they would be more interested in feedback in regards to design flaws huh.

This is really a problem!
It took 15 minutes for my windshield to clear of fog this evening. I have never driven a car that the defroster did not function correctly.
Does the Nitro have the same problem?

Yeah I was kind of curious if the nitro had the same problem as well. Maybe if enough people brought this to Chrysler's attention, it'd get sorted? It's a stab in the dark I guess.

Digger should know.... he has a nitro......didnt you guys know about this?
he bought a KK and then took a couple of pics....then sold it and bought a nitro... Ive seen him on nitroforumz.com and his nickname is nitrofreak....

His windshield probably is defogging different...after all he has a NITRO....

I know from very reliable sources that someone heard that there is probable evidence that he is a spy infiltrated into the LOST forums......

Sneaky one he is :D :D

not to point out the obvious or anything and I agree that the defrost is a little wimpy: I've found that if you take the time to properly scrape the ice off before going anywhere it'll keep up with all but the truly gnarliest of conditions.

while I've never used that stuff I do love me regular rainx for the exterior glass. Works great in the winter too for sure.

I really didn't have much of a problem with it until we had a nice little snow storm move through here, and while driving down the interstate I couldn't keep the windshield defrosted worth a flip on the sides. There's not much you can do for scraping ice when you're driving down the road and it starts snowing heh.

I agree - went on a short (2 1/2 hours each way) road trip yesterday and it was really frustrating. I was constantly having to adjust the heating controls. The problem isn't the outside, it's the inside. The side windows and about 6" on either side of the windshield (again, on the inside) kept frosting up. I kept alternating between the front defrosters and the upper (head level) heating controls. This is nothing to do with the defrost button but I did have this on for much of the drive. Which, by the way helped me get a less than satisfying 16.8 mpg for what was almost entirely a highway trip.

The problem is primarily glare and lack of visibility; as long as there is a coat of frost, regardless of how thick, it all lights up at night by other vehicles' headlights (from vehicles in front or behind).

Something I noticed was the corner "vents" in the extreme corners of the dash are either not working or are for decoration only - I didn't have a chance to look at them yesterday to see if there are even any holes. But cranking up the front defroster to maximum there was no air coming out whatsoever, which will make defrosting the extreme sides of the windows more than a little difficult.

Now, granted, the temperature was a little extreme (around -5F) outside yesterday but I don't remember getting a notice with my KK saying it was only useful to drive in mild (or dry) weather.

This seems like a small problem but it really pisses me off. What a basic function that should have never left the designers desk this way.
This isn't rocket science, cars and trucks have had working defrosters for many years.
It is hard to believe that this was not caught in the testing stages.
I don't see a easy fix either. You would almost have to replace the whole dash and whatever ducting is under it to really have it work right.
Between the leaks in the roof, the defrost issue and other things I have been less than happy with the KK Liberty.
I am starting to regret trading my Commander in.
