Post subject:  HELP! Tranny issue!

So today I was going to take my KK out (it only has about 305 miles on the clock) I turned it on, hit reverse and nothing happened except that weird noises started coming from down under (it sounded like when you change gears and do not apply the clutch on time... you know the sound like grinding gears)
I immediately put it back on park turned the car off and then back on and it was back to normal....
No error codes no nothing... what gives????
thanks!

This happened to me as well numerous times when backing up my driveway. I took it in to the dealer and they said, sorry we cant reproduce the problem so you we cant fix anything, just like they always do. The way I got it to stop was when it does this just put it back in drive move slightly forward then put it back in reverse and everything was ok. Annoying but nothing is catastrophic yet!

sounds like an adjustment issue. anyone know if the shifter is connected to the tranny via cable or is everything going electronic now?

hasnt happened again......
I guess it "fixed" itself... thank God the tranny is a part of the powertrain (hence lifetime warranty!)

I think that your computer was slow to react to your acceleration. This happens to alot of trannys. This is normal.I could do everytime if I wanted to.Just give it a second so your computer can do its thing, and you should be OK.

Silver I had the same problem last night. I was driving home from a drill weekend and we got a little bit of snow up here, so I had my 4wd on. Got home, turned off the 4wd, and parked the thing. My fiancee and I were going out on a little bit of a date and she wanted to drive the jeep, so I said sure no problem. I forgot something back in the apartment, so I ran inside while she backed up. When I got outside she said the thing was making some weird grinding noises in reverse, but had stopped. So I chocked it up to the tire on snow noise. Anyhow, we ended up at the mall that evening, and when she went to put it into reverse...nada. The engine was reveving, but the tires weren't moving. So we shifted through all the gears a few times, and finally we were able to get into reverse. After a couple hundred yards, there was a weird knocking noise coming from the tranny it sounded like. So we pulled into a parking lot, turned it off, back on, shifted through the gears again and it was fine. Tested out all the gears at home last night, as well as the 4wd and 4lo.

Sorry about being long winded, but has anyone else had that issue? Maybe the sub zero temperatures made it unhappy or something?

Your problem was you had not completely shifted out of 4wd yet, that was what the loud bang was, finally shifted into 2wd.You have to disengage the t-case well before stopping, some straight line driving is needed with those electronic shifted t-cases to completely disengage them fully. You can't park, flip the switch and think it's fully disengaged, doesn't work like that.

See that's the weird thing, I disengaged the 4wd about three blocks before I pulled in and parked (since the road there was plowed). I would have thought that would have been ample enough time for it to disengage. I suppose if it does it again, I'll take it over to the dealership and have them take a look at it.

Oh yeah, and it wasn't a loud bang, it was more of a constant knocking noise while driving down the road in 2wd.

Some electronic t-cases can take over 1 mile to disengage.Remember you only have a little electric motor trying to move that shift fork and when in part time 4wd there is alot of binding going on that the electric motor can not force past.

Long live the human operated t-case shift lever 8) .

Yeah there's just a sense of re-assurance when you shift it by hand. Sigh, I miss my WJ. It's still knocking today, so I dunno. When I drive it around the block a few times it goes away. Could it be something with the cold causing it? Dealership said the earliest they could get me in was friday morning (I pretty much loathe my dealership here in town). Basically shot my plans for Christmas now, and it might not get sorted out before I leave for training.

Yep,GM went threw these problems with electric shift t-cases for like 15 years(and they still don't have it fixed).

Took it into the dealership today, and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Fun stuff.
