Silver I had the same problem last night. I was driving home from a drill weekend and we got a little bit of snow up here, so I had my 4wd on. Got home, turned off the 4wd, and parked the thing. My fiancee and I were going out on a little bit of a date and she wanted to drive the jeep, so I said sure no problem. I forgot something back in the apartment, so I ran inside while she backed up. When I got outside she said the thing was making some weird grinding noises in reverse, but had stopped. So I chocked it up to the tire on snow noise. Anyhow, we ended up at the mall that evening, and when she went to put it into reverse...nada. The engine was reveving, but the tires weren't moving. So we shifted through all the gears a few times, and finally we were able to get into reverse. After a couple hundred yards, there was a weird knocking noise coming from the tranny it sounded like. So we pulled into a parking lot, turned it off, back on, shifted through the gears again and it was fine. Tested out all the gears at home last night, as well as the 4wd and 4lo.
Sorry about being long winded, but has anyone else had that issue? Maybe the sub zero temperatures made it unhappy or something?
Your problem was you had not completely shifted out of 4wd yet, that was what the loud bang was, finally shifted into 2wd.You have to disengage the t-case well before stopping, some straight line driving is needed with those electronic shifted t-cases to completely disengage them fully. You can't park, flip the switch and think it's fully disengaged, doesn't work like that.
