Post subject:  Roof Rack for '08 KK w/ SkySlider Roof

I am looking for a roof rack solution for my KK with the SkySlider roof. I Have looked everywhere for something that will work, but nothing can provide enough clearance for the roof to open. I would need siderails that could provide at least 6.5" to 7" clearance to accommodate siderails and accessories.

I would really like to find something with a steel, tubular, open basket -like design, similar to the FJ Cruiser's OEM rack. Anything high enough to allow the SkySlider to open would work though. I have heard that Rock Lizard Fabrications is working on racks for the KKs, but nothing they currently have on their website would work with the SkySlider. I have attempted to contact them, but have not received a response.

In retrospect, I would have gone without the SkySlider. I have had problems with excessive wind noise from the beginning; however, the most recent service bulletin (23-013-08 Rev. B) greatly reduced the noise.

Anyone else looking for rack for their KK? Anyone know of any racks in production? Anyone know of anyone who would want to custom fabricate a rack? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Someone was on here a while ago. They had posted pics of something they were working on for this. I think they just extended the roof rails (DIY).

Aurora, IL? Isn't that where Wayne's World took place?

Try looking at this thread. I'm guessing this is the thread you're referencing. Unfortunately, there wasn't any closing follow-up. You could try posting a reply to bump it up on the board and/or sending the author a PM.

There was actually another thread that I believe I started in which someone posted a pic of some sort of fabricated roof rack. The thread that was posted a couple of posts up is not the one.

What is the Rev. B skyslider TSB? Anyone have access to it? Is it different than the one in the Tech section on this forum?

Thanks to all for welcoming me to the site. I have had my KK since Nov. ’08 and am anxious for good weather so I can see what she is truly capable of. I’m really hoping that more aftermarket parts are released in the near future. I have high hopes for my new Jeep. I have a vision for what she can become over the next couple years; funds, time and warranties permitting. I have been reading through the forums and really like what many of you are doing with your Jeeps. I am glad to have found this website.

I once thought I had mono for an entire year, it turns out I was just really bored. Party on Wayne! Wayne’s World will always be Aurora’s claim to fame, but the reality of Aurora is much less...well, cool. It’s always party time, but not always so excellent. The movie is based on an Aurora Cable Public Access show, but the only part of Aurora that was actually shown in the movie was the old White Castle. The rest was filmed in Berwyn, IL, Chicago and CA, but Wayne’s World is still how my mom explains to people where we’re from.

TSB 23-013-08 Rev. B was released December 19, 2008 to reduce the wind noise from the SkySlider in the closed position. It involves replacing the front header bow, lubing up the cables and flashing the SkySlider. I have heard varying success rates with the fix, but it really reduced the noise in mine. Before they performed the TSB, the noise was unbearable. It began at about 40 mph, depending on wind speed and direction, and at around 80 mph it sounded like the roof was going to fly off. Now I don’t experience much noise until 60mph+. We’ll see if that lasts. I have been trying to get WeatherTech to produce a deflector for it, but no luck so far. I believe the SkySlider was poorly engineered and that a properly designed deflector could eliminate much of the noise. I could email you a copy of the TSB if you would like or I will post it to the thread with the other TSBs when I figure out how.

Thanks again for welcoming me to the site. I will post pics, mods and stories as they come.

RPM007,

Welcome to the board. I've found it really useful too.

If you haven't already registered your KK in our KK sticky poll, please do. We're trying to help build up our number of enthusiasts as quickly as possible to spur the aftermarket.

Welcome aboard sir. The TSB you speak of is actually the one I recently had performed. I too have had good results with it. I am in total agreement though that a wind deflector would do wonders for this issue. I hope weathertech will realize the market potential of this product, I think anyone with a skyslider would be interested. Could be big $$$$ for whoever is first to market with it.

TSB Rev B?

Can anybody find/post? It sounds like it's the same TSB (or similar) to the old one.

My skyslider was built in April2008, so the old TSB doesn't cover mine. Anybody know the production dates for the new TSB?

Thanks
BrendonR

Brendon it is a different TSB than the old one. Mine was built in March of 2008, and the new TSB applied to my KK. I have not seen a copy of it, the dealer found it when I complained about noise. It does not make the roof silent, but it makes it acceptable. I do mostly highway driving during the week, and it used to be unbearable at times, now I barely notice it. Now the sound does seem to pick up under certain conditions like driving into a head wind, but it is much improved.

When it was really noisy, I was questioning my beloved skyslider. Now as warm weather is on the horizon, I can't wait to open that baby up.

Thanks Zoso - could you send me the ACTUAL/pdf TSB? I'd love to bring it into the dealer with me.

I called them to ask about it, and they searched my VIN - and said that Chrysler hasn't issued anything for my vehicle, but any problems are covered under warranty, so bring it in and they'll look at it.

I'd love to bring in this RevB TSB with the skyslider and say, "apply this" when I go.

Thanks very much.

Brendon I don't have a copy of it, but Digger seems to be able to get a hold of them.

Would be great Digger, I have an appointment next week with my whisteling
SkySlider.
I really don't know if it was a good to offer the SkySlider in Germany with no speed limit on the Autobahn.
But I bought it, so my fault. I hope they will be able to stop at least the really annoying noises.

FYI
The 2.8 CRD is doing a 115 mph.
