Post subject:  Skid plate install question

Thinking about skidplates for my ride. I've heard the install is tough on the gas tank skid. Should I have the dealer do that one and myself do the rest? Anyone do the install or have the group for advice for what o do? I'm handy but have limited equipment for install.

Thanks, Jon

its easy. All of the nutzerks should be in place for the skids. As far as the gas tank, it is only 5 bolts. Just run the tank down to almost empty and use a jack to support the tank while you remove the supports. then have a friend hold the tank while you insert the skid. The skid at that point becomes your new tank support

Who makes good skid plates?

Also is paying from $500 to $1K normal for skip plates?

I have never paid for these before, so I am lost on what fair prices are..

OEM/Mopar are the only ones out there.

I have the Mopar plates on mine. You will have to install the nutserts but the tranny plate and transfer plate come with the nutserts and the bolt & spacer "thingee" to do it. The transfer plate instructions do not mention the nutserts - Surprise! if you haven't read the instructions for the tranny plate. The engine and transfer can be done with the Libby on the ground, although the rear bolts of the engine plate are a grunter but you really need to get it lifted to have enough room to do the tranny plate. The engine and tranny plates use two common bolts and are a pain to keep together while you're trying to thread the bolts through. I have the gas tank plate but haven't tried it yet. If I can do it at all, I'll have to get the rear lifted up. I may end up paying a friendly garage to do it for me.

Edited to add: just regular hand tools are all you need, Jon. 9/16 wrench, 14, 16, 17, 18 mm sockets (if I remember right) and a 3" or 5" ratchet extension. BTW, there are two nuts to attach a bracket to the gas tank skidder. The 10mm nuts supplied are the wrong size, you need 8 MM.

Edited to say: Duh! I finally got around to the gas tank skid. The The studs for the bracket are 10 mm. The nuts Jeep supplies are 12 mm.
