Am I reading the manual correctly when it recommends oil changes every 6,000 miles?

I do mine every 5k....rotate the tires then also.

As long as you're not in the "heavy duty" range...ie lots of off roading, lots of dusty conditions, extreme high temps...etc, then 6k intervals shouldn't be a problem.

I have done every 3000 myself but that is always what my manual has said. I just thought it was odd that the manual was saying every 6000 miles now.

Have you done a used oil analysis to confirm that?

^^Shady business practices. They can't dictate oil change interval like that. You only have to go by the book unless They provide the oil changes at different intervals for free. Magnusson-Moss warranty act covers stuff like this. If you ever get any flak from them, mention the MM act and give them your attorneys card and they will stfu quick.

Most modern oils, Especially Full synthetics like Amsoil, Mobil1 Extended, etc. Can go much further than 5K intervals. Auto MFG's are pushing longer intervals to lower their pollution generation levels as a way to lower overall gubment dictated standards for emission/pollution generation.

UOA's of many of Amsoils full syns (using their Ea series filters) show that OCI's can be extended past 10-15K. I have a customer w/ an 05 Mustang running the 7500 series 5w20, non full syn oil w/ an Ea series filter to 9-10K miles and his UOA's are coming back showing the oil is still in good condition to continue using.

Regardless of all of that, unless you plan on keeping your vehicle forever and running it into the ground, even Good modern dino oil w/ a 5K OCI using good filtration should allow an engine to last a good long time w/ little chance of an oil related failure.
Personally, I run the best products, change my oil once a year or 10K miles (yeah, no commuting here), have good OUA's in the past and peace of mind doing so.

For me depends on what I am doing
for normal everyday driving I change every 5000/6000 ( been using Mobil 1 for years)
If I have been off road a lot, or pulling one of my trailers for a long distance then I will change the oil more often, like 3 to 4000 miles
All of my last 9 new vehicles I have driven into the 250,000/300,000 mile range and have never had any motor problems and no oil usage using my method.

Good Freaking lord that's a long time...

Let's call that 2,500,000 miles total....

at an average speed of.... 50 miles/hour is 50,000 hours driving....

That's 2,083.33 DAYS

THAT'S 5.71 YEARS!!!!!

holy crap....

So I called the Dealer this morning and they advised me to change the oil every 3000 miles. They also did say that the manual does say every 6000 miles but they have never seen this before. They did mention it was probably is misprint in the manual.

So I called Chrysler Customer Care they said the oil is to be changed every 6000 miles, but I should take it in to my dealer to get their opinion. They informed me the manual is wrong.

So I know from a dealer perspective that they are going to want to do an oil change every 3000 miles (it just makes sense from a business point of view) but who should you trust the dealer or the manufacture?

my display at like 2500 states change oil soon. To put 500 miles on my jeep takes a good 2-3 weeks. LOL its a small annoyance for 500 miles.
