Post subject:  A whistle and Air?

Guys,

I installed my AEM brute force intake today. Went pretty good and used a 16 gauge wire. I do have a question though.

I went for a drive down the road and when in a low gear around 2000 RPM i could hear a whistling sound. I never heard this before and if I gave it a little gas it went away or if I was driving fast it went away? Is this just something the air intake does (never had one so I don't know).

Now my next question. After the quick road trip i left the car on and opened the hood. I could hear what sounded like air coming out of somewhere. Just making a sppsssssssssssss....sound. Couldn't pinpoint it though. All of my connectors from the intake are very tight as well. I went and turned off the car and when I did i heard what sound like a small burst of air come down to the end of the air intake. Started it up again and shut if off for the same thing.

Am I worring to much, or is this what an Air Intake does? I have a scan gauge and there are no error codes or nothing? Thoughts?

Hmmm I installed my AEM bruteforce yesterday and I have not noticed a whistling sound....as for the spssss sound was your A/C on? I heard a spsss sound too but it was the A/C since the freon is located near the intake. I have that sound of a small burst of air when I turn off my car....I just thought it was normal.

So do you think the whisting is something to worry about? Everything is really tight on the Jeep. The AC was not on with the sound of air coming out from somewhere. Anyone else have any thoughts or is this normal stuff?

Might check to see if you knocked a vacuum hose loose during the install.

I don't know much about engines, so where is the vacuum hose located?

There should be one main one coming off the back of the intake manifold, goes over to the power booster on the brake maser cylinder. I know you have a KK but the layout should be similar enough that this will get you in the ballpark:

The hose outlined in yellow is the one I'm talking about. Find the end on the engine side and you should see some smaller ones as well for other items that use vacuum (blend door on the heater, cruise control, etc).

the whistling sound is normal i have it also, more so because of my throttle body space i also installed... its just the air through your throttle body, its noticable around 2100 RPM, this sound should actually decrease with a free flowing exhaust cause the air will flow easier out will less pressure.

The whistling sound isn't really a whistle but more of a slight "whine", but thanks for confirming it is normal around those rpm at lower speeds. Now if I only knew of the spssssssssss air sound. Could it be the air intake sucking in air to the throttle body and I am just hearing it? I didn't hear the first time I started the car when I let it idle for 3 min. Just seemed to do it after the car warmed up a bit and after we went for a drive.

I checked the vacuum hoses and they are tight. Any other thoughts or ideas? Or again, is it normal.

No other thoughts or ideas? I looked around and couldn't see anything that seems loose. I am thinking this sound might have been there before the intake because everything with the intake is on really tight. Just can't find where the sound is coming from. The car runs the same, so no issues there, no rough idle or anything like that.

Soooooo.....am I going to blow my Jeep up?

If all else fails, put the stock intake back on and see if the sound is still there.
If not, then there is nothing else loose. Put the AEM brute force back on, you have piece of mind, and are good to go. 8)

Yeah, I was just hoping someone else with an intake could let me know if they hear the same thing. I may do what you suggested, just a lot of work to take it off put old back on and then put AEM back on.

It's hard for someone else to say if what you are hearing is good or bad. You are trying to describe a sound via text. You will hear a lot of different noises with an aftermarket intake then with the stock box. If you don't notice any problems with it driving then just leave it.

Agreed - OR......

Why not try taking a video clip and uploading it here. Maybe the guys will recognize the noise when they hear it?

That's amazing. My hose is just black, not outlined in yellow, like yours.

I'm here all week.

Do you have to keep taking it out because everytime you put it back, you've got mystery parts left over?

I keed! I keed! :P

Maybe I will do that. The car drives fine, just as good if not better than before. I am assuming if there was a problem of some kind the check engine light or another light of some kind would be on and nothing is on. I can verify with the scan gauge. I will try to upload a clip so you can hear it, maybe that will help.
