Post subject:  serv 4wd light on

Car was stuck in 4wd the other day. Had to turn the car off and back on again to get it in to 2wd.

Was out on a trail today and it was a bit slippy so stopped and put it in to 4wd. pretty soon after the serv 4wd light was on. The car has only done 3000km and been in 4wd a handful of times.

I seem to remember the deal showing me that I would hear the change from 2wd to 4wd, and from 4wd to 4wd low. I've just sat in the garage and can only hear the engage from 2wd to 4wd, but nothing happens from 4wd to 4wd low. Also had a drive and it feels like it winding up on tight turns in normal 4wd. Could it only have 2wd and 4wd low working?

Sounds like your Transfer case has bound up.

Does this mean you were driving on PAVEMENT in 4wd? Driving on pavement in 4wd is not good, and can bung up your T-Case.

Sounds like their is an issue with either the shift motor or with the Tcase it self. Can you pull the codes from the KK? If so let me know as I might be able to help. In the end thought, It sounds like a trip to the dealer :(

Will call the dealer tomorrow (Monday) and book her in. As I said 3000km just over 4 weeks old, I'm not impressed.

Only use 4wd when reversing up our drive or off road. We use it on the drive as the front wheels get stuck at the kerb and we have spun the rears a few times in 2wd.

The dealer told us to use 4wd in bad rain on the roads... Is this wrong?

Do I need a cable/software to pull codes?

All you need is a code reader

It depends on which transfer case you jeep has. 231 with part time = bad. 242 full time = OK.

I'm dropping in the garage on Wednesday morning for them to read the codes.

Been in to the garage, didnt get the code, but they have "performed a software upgrade" on the 4wd system that seems to have fixed it (off to a dirt track on Saturday to test it!!)

AND they replaced a Tyre Plaque (H42 recall)

All that while I waited :-) First garage that I have had dealings with that have service staff in at 7.a.m and not just the receptionist to collect keys.
