Post subject:  Aftermarket Shock Question

I am looking for information on a good set of aftermarket shocks. I have a 3.5 Rock Krawler lift and noticed after a pretty heavy day of wheeling that I am maxing my shocks out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

1st would be to get rid of the RK lift and buy a good lift.

Bilsteins are probably your best mid price bet. Now you can go all out on some fox ones to :D

Just stay away from skyjacker

If you are truley maxing out your shocks.

Talk with Fox or Bilstien about a Custom shock with more travel.
They may already make something that fits.

Keep an eye on your ball joints...

Thanks to everyone that answered the question at hand, Digger I know there is a thread posted on here somewhere that you posted the travel specs of the stock shocks. Could you hook a brother up ?

Ok, Now I can't speak for the 2.5 lift shocks, but the 4.0 shocks are not engineered correctly regarding the valving on the inside. Now because they were meant of a 80's K series chevy truck, the shocks were meant to dampen the return stroke of the leaf spring. So basically with the SJ shock, it only dampens the up stroke/ decompression, not the down stroke/compression

I will get the specs for you in a few :D

I believe the KK's use the same rear shocks as the KJ's so you might want to look into running the Rancho 17004's which are good for 3.5"-4" of lift, gave my heavy KJ a very good ride.

All I needed was the h7088.. Thanks

So going back to earlier, the sky jacker shock is very close to the stock shock. The SJ is 24.84 x 14.82 ans OEM is 21.75 x 14.00

Now explaining my numbers, the first one is full extension and the second one is full compression.

Now the fox ones are 22.80 x 14.30 or 26.10 x 16.10

If the 22.80 were ran, under full flex, you may reach full un compression on the down ward tire before you react the true limit on the KK but you wouldn't have a problem on the other side of the axle.
If the 26.10 were ran, full flex wouldn't be a problem on the down ward tire as you would still have some shock left but on the up ward tire, it my not reach the full compression limit of the KK

Also keep in mind that I'm figuring that the shock will move its fill travel during flex. I could be full of crap about this whole subject since the shock my never use its full range of motion which would mean either shock would be fine

bilstein 25.93 x 15.91
