The outside of the engine has nothing to do with performance or how the engine runs. Just pop the hood and spray it with the hose. You can take a soft bristle brush and scrub the really dirty parts.

One advantage to having a clean engine is being able to identify any problems easier(leaks n things).
Always clean your engine when cool.
1st cover your fuse box and alternator with a plastic grocery bag.
Then use a degreaser,and hose down. :D

Your engine will actually run better and for longer. All that dirt and mud can work it's way into the electrical connectors which are only "weather proof" and not "water proof",which causes sensors to go bad, plus mud doesn't do wonders for your alternator either or the seals and bearing exposed.Plus the biggest advantage of having a clean engine is when you or a tech works on your engine you/they will be much happier.

Try to do it when engine is cool. And don't get too carried away with the water. Little soap a water goes along ways especially when done on a regular basis
