Post subject:  TPMS and steel wheels

the place i had mount and balance my tires said that the cragar soft 8s were not compatible with the TPMS sensors. are they feeding me full of crap or what? another thing, one of my valve stems broke before i had the new wheels put on and now i need to order a new sensor. is there a way to disable the TPMS or at least get the light to shut off of my dash, its pretty annoying.

The dealership can disable the TPM system completely. As far as the soft 8"s I don't know. If no one in here knows, well will just have to ask the KJ guys as they will know...

thanks for the heads up. you know how much them reprogramming it will cost? i need to run down there anyway cause whenever i manually turn off my blinker while switching lanes itll flash the wrong direction a few times.

IDK. If they hook up the star scan to look for DTC's, the tech could do it then. I would think it would take less than 2 minutes to shut it off...

you do know that if you just tap the turn signal in either direction it will have that direction signal blink 3 times, its a lane change feature

i just put steel wheels on my 05 and i found on the internet that tpms does not work correctly with steel wheels because it blocks the signal, it also said that it is illegal to disable the tpms since it is a mandatory safety feature as of like 03 or 04 i think, how true that is i dont know, but just something to think about. After i put the new wheels on the tpms was acting normal, but all i did was city driving, but on the way into work this morning once i got up to speed on the interstate the tpms light came on, it doesn't chime though so i'm just gonna ignore the light, good luck

I hate the tpms.

I know the light stays on even after they have been disabled. This was confirmed on a KJ and I am not sure if you can even do it anymore. But I would bet when deactivated the light still stays on... the chime goes away but the (!) stays all the time.

It is up to the shop to decide what is a fair charge to reset... I have been doing it for free if it's done with a tire swap, LOF, rotation, or the vehicle is under warranty. If its not... it depends on how difficult the situation is (sensor problem or I don't know how to set my tire pressure problem) and of course if you brought doughnuts this morning.

Did I mention I hate the tpms

It comes on when it cold and it only has to be 1 tire out of the 5 on your vehicle to set it off.

So if your parked outside on a cold night, when the sun comes up, and warms the left side of the car, but the right is still frosty... the tpms can come on.

If you set all your tires to 32 psi, and your spare is 25... the light can come on.

If you (not in our jeeps) cold start... say... a Challenger, run it until it's warm and then do a big smokey burnout, the tpms will come on.

It is overly sensitive, cheaply manufactured, crap, that you will be forced to replace when the battery dies or the stem snap off.

I hate tpms

Never rush to the dealer the first time the light comes on... check your pressures (all 5 tires) and monitor the situation yourself for a bit before calling in to set up an appointment.

I will also add that the Nitrogen seems to be more stable and vehicle with it installed have less tpms lights and chiming due to weather related issues.

any other questions?

The TPMS is federally mandated on all vehicles as of 2008.
Some auto manufactures chose to include the system in earlier models. If you have a 2007 or earlier it is not required to have it on your rig. However, dealers either can not or will not turn them off.

The TPMS idea, all came about because of the "blow-out roll over" issues that happened with the Ford Explorers / Firestone tires in the late 1990's. With each one pointing the finger at each other for who should be liable.

So the idea was hatched to put in a TPMS system. If the consumer does not react to the warnings, then no one can sue my company. We can blame the consumer. This is the whole idea behind a TPMS.

It is not a safety issue, as they would like you to believe. It all comes down to liability and the $$$$.

I have an 07 and they will not disable the system, even though it is not mandated until 08. I hate the TPMS!.

Factoid:
Porsche introduced the first direct-type tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in 1997.
