Hey guys, I have been following this forum for some time as I have an 08 4x4 Sport. I did some research and I was going to put in a MyGIG but I decided I will go with an aftermarket unit (Eclipse AVN-726E) and I was wondering if anyone has any pointers for when I go to install in a few weeks? I purchased the dash kit, harnesses and all and have done a lot of systems in the past but never a nav install. Ultimately I will either fabricate a 10"/12" sub enclosure into a back panel or potentially into the mud storage area in the back, but as that project starts I will be sure to share pics and news! |

What i tell every one is this. 1. Reseach the system, make sure it has update for a cost you are ok with. 2. Put the GPS Antenna in a place where it can see the clouds clearly. and have a metal plate under it if it has magnits. This helps. I have installed over 2,000 nav units. and I work with an EE whos job it was to deal with GPS signals. Placing it under the dash is nice, but it weeken the the system durring bad weather, urban canyons, and trees. 3. Never coil up extra GPS wire. it will degreese it chance of relaying a clean signal to the head unit. Not a huge deal to day, but it is still good to know. Also note. A garmin nuvi or any 2010 Garmin unit will have access to the $119 Life time Update pacakge. You pay 1 fee one time and get new maps 4 times a year, if they are made. Or go with Tom Tom Pay $9.99 each quarter for an update. The draw back is your unit might need to be at a certain map level to start the program, that cost can be $99 to get it current, but you need to read the fine print. Most OEM systems cost $199 to $379 for maps each year from NavTeq. Other systems not supported by Navteq sell from $89 to $800 each year. Just so you know... |

Cool - great tips for when I install in a couple of weeks! I like the idea of the cell phone GPS taped to the dash haha! Maybe I can plug in my laptop and mount in front over the glove for DVD's and entertainment too! I'll keep you posted around 2nd week of Jan with pics of the install and notes on how it worked. Happy holidays to all! |

All done! Here are some install pics! ![]() Gutted! ![]() Looks like a hot mess but it's all set! ![]() Looking Pretty! (Minus the install smudges!) ![]() The Hangover.....don't mind if I do! Install wasn't bad, probably took me 4-5 hours as it was my first time with a nav system and I did a lot of reading and was careful. I needed an adapter for the FM and Sirius antennas so I still need to hook the up, otherwise everything is sweet. Nav gets great reception and works better than any other system I have used (TomTom and Garmin), has more POI's than almost any competition and lane guidance as well. The bluetooth works like a charm, everyone I have called said it sounds totally normal not like a speakerphone. The screen is beautiful for nav and DVDs and of course I bypassed the parking/ebrake monitors to be able to operate on the fly (with caution of course Let me know if you guys have any questions about the install I'd be happy to share more info! -Joe |

So when you press play does your left turn signal switch on too? Or am I the only one who has that problem... Shoulda had a professional install mine... Looks awesome though. No trouble bypassing the parking/ebrake monitors and what not? Also, don't suppose you could post a shot of the GUI for the system? Kinda interested because I'm toying with doing either a carpc or nav unit here in the near future. (The old hacked Magellan 4040 is great and all, but i'd like to have something mounted in the dash...) |

If you decide to go this route, you may want to check out some of the reviews on this unit, it does have some flaws which are only significant if you use those features... for example there is no off switch and sometimes CD music will blare full volume without a quick way to turn off, no CD track controls, phone is not hands free (voice commands not supported), it won't accept highway addresses.... most reviews says the garmin is a better navigator, but the display on this device is awesome. I hear add ons, like traffic, are very expensive. Just saying take a careful look at what you expect and will use the dash nav unit for, as your mileage will vary. |

I wish the KJ could fit something as easy as that. |
