I replaced the original Goodyears today with new tires at Sam's. Got a good deal on some meatier looking tires. Question....what's up with the TPM system? Will it reset eventually or would a non-dealership tire change mess up the sensors? If it doesn't reset after a couple of starts/restarts, is there a way to disable the alert? Paul |

Will it reset eventually or would a non-dealership tire change mess up the sensors? If it doesn't reset after a couple of starts/restarts, is there a way to disable the alert? Paul In short, go for a nice little drive where you won't have to stop for 20 minutes... then part and have lunch. If it hasn't reset by then, Sam's either under inflated the tires or jacked up one of your sensors...... OPERATION The battery operated tire pressure sensor is both a transmitter and a receiver. The TPM sensor can be forced to transmit if using a special tool such as a TPM-RKE Analyzer, or from a transponder. (Refer to 22 – TIRES/WHEELS/TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING/TRANSPONDER - OPERATION) The TPM-RKE Analyzer has the ability to change the sensor’s operating mode and to diagnose a faulty TPM sensor. Using a TPM-RKE Analyzer can take up to a minute to force a transmission from a sensor. The TPM sensor can be in one of the following modes: • Sleep Mode – A new TPM sensor will be in this mode. If placed on the vehicle as a road tire, the TPM sensor will transmit once every 20 seconds when the vehicle is driven at speeds over 15 mph (24 km/h). If the vehicle is not moving, the sensor will only transmit on a pressure change greater then 1 psi (6.9 kPA). Driving the vehicle continuously at speeds over 15 mph (24 km/h) for more then 4 minutes will change the sensor state into 30 BLOCK MODE. The TPM sensor will not return to SLEEP MODE. Now, if the vehicle has been stopped for 20 minutes, the TPM sensor state will change to PARK MODE. • Park Mode – This is the correct operating mode when the vehicle is not moving. The sensor will transmit once every 13 hours to update the WCM, or will transmit on a 1 PSI delta change. The sensors will internally take a measurement of the tire pressure every minute to determine a change in tire pressure • 30 Block Mode – If the vehicle has been stopped for more then 20 minutes, or if the sensor’s operating mode was forced to Park Mode using a TPM-RKE Analyzer, the sensor’s operating mode will transition from Park Mode to 30 Block Mode once the vehicle is driven over 15mph. In this mode, the sensor will transmit once every 15 seconds when the vehicle is driven at speeds over 15 mph (24 km/h) for the first 30 transmissions. After about 8 minutes of continuous driving above 15 mph (24 km/h), the sensor’s mode will change to Drive Mode • Drive Mode – In this mode, the sensor will transmit once every minute when the vehicle is driven at speeds over 15 mph (24 km/h). At any time that the vehicle speed drops below 15mph, the sensor will not transmit. The sensor mode will still be in drive mode when the sensor reaches speeds over 15 mph (24 km/h). If the vehicle has been stationary for more then 20 minutes, the TPM sensor will change to PARK MODE. Each sensor’s (transmitter) broadcast is uniquely coded so that the wireless control module (WCM) can monitor the state of each of the sensors on the four rotating road wheels. The WCM can automatically learn and store the sensor’s ID while driving “within 10 minutes continuously above 15 m.p.h. (24 Km/h)” after a sensor has been replaced, The vehicle must be stationary for more then 20 minutes in order to initiate the learning sequence. The sensor IDs can also be programmed using the TPM-RKE Analyzer Tool. Scan each TPM sensor at each road wheel, and store each Sensor ID in the correct location. (LEFT FRONT, LEFT REAR, RIGHT FRONT, and RIGHT REAR) Connect the TPM-RKE Analyzer Tool to the Scan Tool. Then follow the programming steps outlined in the diagnostic Scan Tool for “Program Tire Pressure Sensor ID w/ TPM Tool” under “MISC” for the “WCM/WIRELESS CONTROL MODULE”. |

Thanks Digger. I knew you would have the answer. I got the Goodyear Silent Armors at the 235/70 size. More aggressive looking tread and very quiet on the road. Much beefier looking tire compared to the original junk. I got about 30k out of em, so I guess that's not too bad Paul |

Yeah, I'm gonna have to wait til I go back to work to get a good long drive on her. That'll probably reset the indicator. I've been too busy driving the wife's new Journey SXT Paul |

Quote: Of topic, did you have many problems with the Compass? No, we didn't really have a single issue with the mechanics of the Jeep. It's just that it was so, how shall I put it....."toy-like" It felt cheaply made and plasticky. Even though she had the LTD, it just didn't feel like a real car. The small 4 cyl. engine with the CVT tranny was adequate, but nothing to get all excited about. The only thing I would really complain about was the original tires were Firestone Firehawks. After about 2k miles, the whine from the tires was deafening...even with the windows closed and the radio turned up. We replaced them right away with some Hankooks and all was good. Paul |

I spent like an hour reading all of the horror stories off of one of the compass/patriot forums. It gave me the impression that they were pure junk......... |

I suppose we were lucky then. My son has an 08 Patriot that he has used to travel from Fort Lauderdale, FL to Nova Scotia, Canada and back, twice now, and deliver pizza for a living for about a year, and he has had zero problems/issues with his Jeep. Why do you ask? You looking to get one? Paul |

Paul Na, my next vehicle will have a diesel in it I was doing some research on aftermarket interest for certain parts I did get a few good pointers from them as to how to mount lights and a cheap nut zerk installer |

I've been too busy driving the wife's new Journey SXT Paul Hey my wife and I are a Liberty and Journey family too. At first I was thinking this is a minivan! But its like an airplane with all the cubbies, lights, seating for 7 etc. We have the FWD version. Great, great car for a long trip except IMO for the headrests. Had to buy a neck pillow to stop the pain. Drove better loaded down. Only 2 minor issues, 1 the overhead console busdriver mirror thingy would pop down every time you shut a front door, that should be a recall by the # my dealer siad they have replaced. 2 we seem to have a small sqeak in the driver door dash area that is a little annoying over bumps. But other than that my wife loves the journey and I love the libby. Oh great gas mileage too for the journey. Ray |

Ray, I just found out myself, but did you know that the headrests can be tilted forward/backward by pulling down on the top while pushing on the bottom. It greatly increased comfort. The real problem we have with the headrests is that they can't be lowered all the way. My wife is 5'6" and it hits her at the top of her head.....which won't do much good. Anyway, it's a great vehicle so far. Nice looking and plenty of power with the 3.5L. Paul |
