Hey guys..

went to go to the blacked out headlight housings today, took off the grill, removed headlights.. preheated oven to 250.. threw one in for 10 min... lens wouldnt BUDGE.. went around it with a screwdriver and it just kept peeling back the black part of the housing, but not popping the lens off..

put them back in for 6 min at 275... still wouldn't budge..

i have done blacked out housings on other cars and never had problems like this.

for those who have done this on their KK, is it normal to be that hard to get the lens off? or perhaps they are using a different glue now that doesn't soften like other glues?

just wondering if anyone else ran into this problem and what they did to solve it. im thinking about just getting a heat gun and seeing how that works.

edit: kept trying em, no go.. lol..

heres the process's i tried..

250 @ 10 min, then pried up the plastic clips on the lens.. tried prying the lens away from housing.. just kept peeling back the black housing..

then 275 @ 5 min, tried again, not much better..

then 250 @ another 5 min.. a lil more tacky, but still didn't pull away from housing.

final stand.... 275 @ 10 min.. more tacky, very hot assembly (no blistering) felt like it was peeling away, but no headway...

I F41L...............

the only thing i succeeded on is making the housing around the lens look like doo doo.. haha.

YES it's a PITA to get them off. I did it to mine (white out). I had them in the oven for like 15 min before I was able to get them apart. When you take them out they cool down fast. Preheat to 250 again but leave them in for about 15 before you pull them apart. Your going to have to put some muscle behind them.

yeah, i put plenty of muscle behind em, but didn't want to crack the lens.. and when they were really heated up.. the black part of the housing just kept bending perpendicular to its original position...

maybe ill try it again, now knowing how much of a PITA it is to get them off. i'll try a heat gun, as they get real hot and can concentrate on small areas at a time..

thanks for the response..

This is one mod I've been wanting to do I just need the time. That sucks, now I know what to expect. I also need to get the glue. I've been thinking of getting the Rubber butyl. Well, good luck. Keep us updated, I've only looked at other forums and seen their write ups, so I can't shine light on the subject, sorry.

silicon would work fine for closing them... that or like windshield gum...

from the DIY and my previous experiences, they will seal fine with the glue thats already on them, you just put them back together, heat them up again for the glue to get soft and voila.

i'll try this again next weekend, hopefully with some results. if i can get it done, a complete DIY will follow.
