The right tires - depend on what you're going to do
if you go mudding - there is no substitute for a real mud tire.

if you do 90% highway and a few trails - AT's are probably fine. (although don't run them in mud)

get the tire that's right for the way you drive.

From the reading I have done, mud tires are much better in mud (ATs get all caked up and become useless in some kinds of mud). Mud tires are also typically louder on the road if you are concerned about that. ATs tend to be better in snow and ice but that may vary some by brand.

I have always run ATs on my TJ (still have the stock tires on my KK). I don't get in mud very often but I've been in rocks, gravel and dirt a lot. I really like my BFG ATKOs. They are pretty good in snow and ice. I haven't driven mud tires so I can't really give first hand testimony of the difference.

All the 4wd magazines have articles on various tire types and brands at least once a year. You can learn a lot about brands and types of tires by reading these articles.
