Post subject:  Gas Tank Skid Plate Question

I'm looking for some information from someone that has installed the Mopar gas tank skid plate after purchasing their KK. I went to install mine and I'm seeing something that looks a lot like it (but not as thick I think) already installed. I'm guessing this is what holds the gas tank in place. When I look at the cartoon-like instructions for installing the new skid plate, it seems to mount exactly the same way and I think it uses the same holes in the frame to mount to. I'm a bit confused.

1. Does the new one install over the onld one? (it doesn't look like this would work).

or,

2. Does the new one install in place of the old one which would mean I need to remove the old one?

If number 2 is correct above, is the existing bracket holding up the weight of the gas tank? If so, obviously I would want to wait until the tank is almost empty to do the remove and replace operation.

It replaces the one that is there. You have to drop the tank and then slide the skid in between the jack and the tank. It uses the same holes

Thanks Digger. That's what I thought. It seems strange that the instructions don't mention this especially since you would think there would be a warning about doing it when there isn't much fuel in the tank to avoid having a heavy gas-filled tank fall off the jack and onto someone that wasn't thinking about that.

Is there anything I need to disconnect from the tank to do this or is their enough slack in everything that connects to it to allow this?

There is a wire that is connected to the top of the tank that you can get away with not having to do anything with it, just keep in mind that it is there.

MAKE SURE that you tank is as EMPTY as possible. you will thank youself in the long run and have help doing this, I did it myself and it was quite the PITA.

wecwbe,

x2 on the empty gas tank part. I had 1/4 tank or so when I installed mine and it was still difficult to deal with. Just make sure you have some straps handy to strap it up in the air for a little while so you don't have to hold it up while getting the old part out.

It is tight between the tank and the drive shaft so it takes a little manuevering and muscle.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply wingnuts. You are right about making sure the tank is close to empty. It is big enough as it is to be unwieldy even if it isn't full of gas. Yesterday when I was going to work on it the tank was about 3/4 full. There was no way I was going to do that once I realized how it had to be done. The instructions made it look like all you did was bolt this over the existing tank assembly. Really useless instructions. :furious:

I did see the wire going up to the top of the tank. It is good to know there is a little slack in it.

I think you are right about getting someone to help. It looks like a job that would be much easier for two people. Thanks for your thoughts. :D

Thanks wolverene. I'm going to have to find a way to use straps like you said. You are right about the drive shaft being close. It seems to be just a half inch away or so. Getting the old part out and the new one in is going to be tricky. It looks like a real tight fit. I'll have to make sure I'm just about out of gas next weekend.

Thanks for your help.
