Post subject:  Power Steering SOS

Alright so here's the problem: My power steering assembly (don't think it's the pump itself) has been whining pretty bad the past few weeks. Even when it is not turned all the way left or right, at very low speeds (usually 1st gear and reverse) it whines. It also completely loses power when I am at said speeds. I think what happened was when I was Jeeping, I may have hit a few bumps at slightly excessive speeds. I think it may either be a leak putting air in the system since when I poped the hood last a few days ago, the fluid line was considerably low. Does anybody know the layout of the power steering tubes and things so I can isolate the problem and fix it? Also, what to I need to fix the hole with once I finally find it? Keep in mind I am stationed in Germany so taking it to someone is almost out of the question. Thanks everyone. Rock on. :JEEPIN:

You got a leak somewhere.Start tracing the PS lines from the pump to the R&P gear and then back to the pump for any leaks.Check the pump itself for leaks(generally the shaft seal),and check the R&P steering gear itself. Some R&P gear leaks are not really visible and don't leak on the ground, the inner tie rod boots can hide a leaking seal.

If the pump is leaking you need to replace the pump,no fixing and get OEM only(from experiance the OE pumps are the best). If a line is leakning again you need to replace the whole line,no fixing unless you have a hydraulic hose shop nearby. And finally if the rack is leaking that also requires and whole replacement as it is not serviceable, including the seals. The high pressure line(both sides) and the return line(rack side only) are sealed with a o-ring that must be replaced when ever one of those lines is loosened or replaced, they will leak if trying to re-use the old o-ring.

To bad I didn't see this sooner. I would have told you to come and meet me as I'm in DK right now. If you need part numbers, just let me know.

All of this PLUS the stuff in bold happend to me over the past 2-3 weeks. I took it to the shop and was quoted $1055 parts and labor :( :(
