So my 2010 KK is the first car I've owned (and I owned a few) without a transmission dip stick. I'm learning now that many manufactures are going this way.

I do most of my own work including oil changes and check all fluid at the same time.

Any KK owners found the best aftermarket or otherwise tool to use to check the trany fluid?

From what I've found on the forum you can order a dipstick and tube for an older KJ with the same transmission. Iirc its pretty cheap. I've been meaning to get with someone at the dealership to verify the length of the dipstick they used to check ours and make sure its the same as one I an order but haven't yet... :juggle:

I hate this trend. I owned a MKIV Jetta with a "sealed" transmission that had "lifetime" fluid in it. Bogus. No fluid lasts a lifetime. Of course, they consider lifetime to be 10 years/1XX,000 miles. I still wouldn't want my car to run on the same transmission fluid for 10 years or even close to 100K miles.

They don't want anyone being able to work on their own vehicles anymore. That is one reason why I traded the Jetta for the KJ. I found that I was still able to do the majority of the work I normally performed on my own. No special trips to the dealer needed unless the work get real complicated.

It's got a tube right where you would expect it but there is a cap on it that says "dealer only" or something like that. they don's say it's sealed or never needs service, they want me to go to the dealership to have it checked.

I change my own oil and I certainly know how to read an owners manual so I can check trany fluid properly.

Dealer said I could buy a dip stick for $160.

The older 42RLE trans dipsticks will give you a incorrect reading, that is right from a certified(and still currently working at) Chrysler Tech(posted on JKJ forum).Don't bother with trying to put a '03-'06 KJ dipstick on your '07+ KJ/KK as you will get the incorrect reading.

The correct way for checking the fluid uses a special dipstick and you need a high end scanner to read the trans temp and have the fluid temp to mm ratio chart to get the correct fluid level.

Basically I thoroughly clean my oil dipstick and use it to check my fluid for any contaminations. So far I've had no issues. I still wish I was able to change my own fluid but I can't because I won't know how much fluid is needed.

There's the answer! Looks like we're all going to the dealer.......
