I have had a RRO Wilderness Rack (http://www.rocky-road.com/kjrack.html) and replaced it with a Boiler rack (viewtopic.php?f=34&t=47811). Here's my pros and cons:

The Wilderness rack came with easy shipping, easy to put together and fairly easy to install. It will last you well IF you don't put much weight on it... And I mean NOT much! The problem is it clamps to your factory roof rails, and they don't do well for supporting loads. If you get one of these, I HIGHLY recommend you fabricate a sturdier mounting system. Even then, remember you are still using the factory PLASTIC roof rails. The only design advantage is having a basket design with side-rails all around.

After the loaded Wilderness Rack ripped off the top of my Jeep, taking the roof rails with it, I decided to order a Boiler rack. The Boiler rack REPLACES your factory roof rails... 8 bolts (I had the opportunity to do a much sturdier mounting system using heavier hardware because all but two of the nutzerts in the roof were yanked out when the rack went bye-bye) is all it takes and it fits perfectly, everything you need. The Boiler rack is ONE piece, it comes in the box completely welded, nothing to put together.

The clamp-on light tabs for the Wilderness Rack cost $24 a piece and you have to run the wiring on the outside of the rack. Chip (Boiler) will weld as many light tabs on as you want, exactly where you want them for $5 each. He will also pre-drill the tubing to run all your wiring inside the rack and down the driver's front mounting point, ALL INSIDE, hidden and protected.

The base Boiler roof rack also starts $100 dollars less. I'm not getting anything from this testimonial, but I would have definitely bought the Boiler rack from the beginning if I had known, but hindsight's 20/20.

Here's a pic of my Boiler Roof Rack:

I included a link to Boiler's vendor page at the top, but just look in the vendors section of the main index and you'll see a thread for Boiler's fabrications, his pricing and options are on the opening post. Then send him a PM (I'd recommend including a phone number that way you can talk specifics on what you want).

Unfortunately I don't have one for the KK yet.

I've just kept myself busy with so much other stuff that I forget about you guys.

I'm going to be making a few racks to use up old stock before we rebuild our fixture, again. I'll try to put one on a KK and see what I need to do to make it happen.

I have RRO's side rails. They seem plenty strong enough to me for supporting a down load. Side loads wouldn't be good but if you are just putting gear there, you shouldn't see side loads anyway. I would worry about tree limbs, but that is more a factor of the Jeep hardware, not RRO's stuff. I have a sky slider and am looking to have a kayak rack made to work with the ss and rro side rails. My suggestion, is get rro's side rails and have a local welder fabricate a custom rack. Start with just a light bar or do the whole thing up. If you look at the rro rack, it is just ubolts on a bracket any welder could fab up. The side bars would take some trial and error, and come powder coated from rro so I think they are a good source for them. Your rack would be painted, so it will require some maintenance. My experience with RRO was good. Could have been better but really no big deal for this kind of stuff. I'd suggest everyone build a relationship with a local fab shop. I'm on a first name basis with mine, he gets 4 or 5 projects a year from me. Shelving, brew stands, jeep parts etc.

I work in a local fab shop here in west michigan (Muskegon).... I have made many ( too many? :D ) jeep accessories for others over the years.... am finally starting to make some for my first jeep...an 09 liberty.... the boilers rack does look much sturdier... and will probably be the basis for which I make my own ( no 100% copying).... I am not slamming another and have no interest in either.... but after this long in the trade (25 years)... I have an idea of what might work better for my applications... may even fab mine out of aluminum rnd tube.... still debating that one... as far as the tabs for mntg lights... any local shop could easily add these after the fact if you find another model you like the looks of that doesn't have exactly what you want.

Rock Lizard had some great looking racks on the market before Boiler ever hit the sites, not sure if his web site is still running or not but gives you some ideas as well
What I would like to see is someone making some nice flat racks, no sides
most weld their light tabs too high as well, had to make brackets to get my rack lights down close to the roof and low enough to get into parking garages etc.
Rock Lizard Gecko rack on mine, real steel and almost as strong as Superman :-)r

Post subject:  Re: Roof Rack?

We've been slowly building new parts for our fixture that will accomodate our normal rack OR a flat sides rack. The front, rear, and middle tubes will all be in the same places, with the side tubes lying in the same plane. We just haven't finished using up our stock that belongs to the old fixture, but we're working on that now. We've got a request for a flat rack with no middle tubes that we're trying to work toward, which will initiate ordering the new side tubes. We're going to use the new side tubes as high strength rails as well. When we clear out is old stock that works on the old fixtures, I'm hoping to use one of the racks to check out a KK and get that rolling. All depends on how much different a KK is.

As far as the low light tabs, I could make anything you wanted there Tom, but I will not be making my rack out of steel. My aluminum racks are very rigid and strong, and have a capacity well over what should be put onto a roof. They are cheap to build to boot, very light, and don't rust all over the roof. I see no reason to change what ain't broke!

If you ever decide to change your rack out and want to discuss special light mounting, let me know and we'll work on a concept.

I'm planning on having my KJ stuff reworked and stocked in 4-5 weeks, at which point I'd be ready to compare to a KK. If I can find one quickly, AND if it all just fits perfectly, I would have a KK rack in about 2 months (including HD rails, flat side rack, etc.) Odds are though that it will not fit perfect, and in the worst case, require a seperate fixture. So my estimate is 2 months to heaven knows when.

Either way if you want something now / before september, I'm probably not the answer you're looking for.

im betting youll need different fixtures cause the KK seems wider then the KJ. Im sure we could get you a quick base measurement to see if it would be close...
