Ok, ok. Maybe it's not that bad. However, how many of you have this many problems...

1.) Gas over-flows on nearly every fill-up.
2.) Rear wiper is a PITA to get turned off once you turn it on.
3.) Sky Slider leaks under pressurized car wash.
4.) Sky Slider leaks created stains in headliner at all 4 corners.
5.) Sky Slider is stupid-loud at highway speeds.
6.) Navigation searches bring up crap that is 800mi+ away, never anything close.
7.) Primative 4-speed transmission shifts way too much on highway hills. Sometimes skipping 3rd gear completely.
8.) Engine leaks oil (don't know exactly where from yet)

I'm sure I've missed a few things. There are so many it's hard to keep track of it. I took it to a Jeep dealer and I was told it was out of warranty. I could have crawled through the phone and choked the dude. Especially since it's an '08 with 28k miles on it! The guy told me the warranty expired in July, 2010 since it was sold in July of 2007. I bought the thing in July of 2010 and the dealer told me that it was still under waranty. Ha! I'm such an idiot.

Anyway, any advice? I thought I would try and call Jeep directly on Friday since I may have the day off. They need to step up here because it seems like most of my problems are pretty common. This is my second Jeep too. My first one was a 200 XJ Classic. I loved it and it was about the best vehicle I have ever owned, considering what I put it through.

Don't get me wrong, I love driving the thing, and I love all it's capable of. But I feel robbed.

Oh yeah, it's an '08 Limited with the whole 9 yards.

gas overflow can be remedied by replacing the entire gas tank, some rollover valve internal to it.

dunno bout the rear wiper, mine goes about 3 times after i shut it off... not really a big deal

the Skyslider is garbage, ive always heard convert or any soft top or something other should never be ran through a pressurized car wash, stains on the headliner are easily cleaned with oxyclean.

everybody hates the 42rle trans, there was a tsb for shift points in the trans for 08s iirc

oil leaks from front back left right? burns it?

Any ideas what the new fuel tank costs? Sounds like a PITA. Is that the only fix there is for the fuel over-flow?

I'm not 100% sure where the oil is coming from yet. I haven't had the chance to do any serious investigating. I do know that it is not coming from the drain plug but it is coming from somewhere on the front of the motor. Like I said though, I haven't had the opportunity to crawl up under it to pin-point.

Does your wiper set itself in the off position all 3 times it wipes after you turn it off, Dirty? Mine does. Once I turn it off, the wiper drops into the carrier, below the window, on the tailgate. But then it continues to wipe intermittantly(sp?) while dropping into that carrier on every return wipe. I have to keep turning it on and off till I can get it to stop. I'm not sure what to replace. I thought maybe the switch but why would it return to the carrier when I turned it off if the swtich was bad?

I don't really want to get rid of it. My fear is that if I have these problems now, at 28k, whats it going to be like at 128k? My XJ was nearly perfect at 118k when I traded it in. It just sucks that we spent a lot of money on someting that I expected more out of. I will admit that everything it does, it does very well. Even when I carried a load of 8' 2x4's in it with the tailgate closed.

TSB's are all fine and dandy but that doesn't mean the dealer will fix them. In fact, the dealer I took mine to were total jerks. The guy told me that He'd "flash" the roof software for $81. Why? How will that benefit me other than keeping me from closing it over 50mph? I already do that anyway since I read about the wind bending the front crossbar.

Brendon, I actually did not know that the owners manual stated not to pressure wahs the roof. Thats good stuff. I did stop spraying it though.

I understand these vehicles can be "tuned", does that mean the tuner/chip can correct the shift points too?

Maybe I'll try to call another dealer and see if they will take care of the TSB's. I would be pleased as punch if I could reduce the wind noise and quit having to manually stop fuel pumps at $45.

Oh yeah, I remembered another problem. After driving a few miles at highway speeds, it seems to heat up the brakes and when applied, the rotors feel warped as hell. It brakes completely smooth when they're cold though. It's weird how they don't stay warped. I haven't done any research on this one yet but I was thinking or replacing the rotors with some from EBC or Brembo or something. I assumed that either of those would be better than the originals anyway.

A quick search has found the tank to be about $325. I looked on moparpartsamerica.com which is where I usually buy replacement parts. The tank itself wouldn't be to dificult to change with basic hand tools. Replacing the tank is the one and only fix. I've dealt with mine since I got it cause it was also out of warranty.

The wiper problem is definitely weird...

Has your oil been changed lately? How much oil is leaking? The oil filter is on the front of the block and there is a drain tray under the filter to guide the oil from your filter. Could possibly just be residual. Could also be something as simple as the o-ring on the filter doesn't have a good seat or possibly is doubled up if the old o-ring stuck there.

I don't have a skyslider so I can't help you too much. The flash is definitely not going to do anything for wind noise though. I would try and find where the air is leaking through or whatever it is and change the seal or make it a tighter fit somehow... idk though...


Best of luck though. I've had to change a lot of parts, and it definitely irks me sometimes, some I may have caused myself but I still like to spend money on it and go wheelin.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with your kk. Dont you have a 5 year/100k mi warranty on the powertrain? I know the 2010's come with it. That part of the warranty should cover the oil leak.

Buying used it's always a gamble if the 1st(or 1st and 2nd) owner(s) ever took care of it and now why you are having so many issues.Don't blame the Jeep blame the other owner.Plus the more "loaded" it is the more will go wrong,plain and simple and a fact of life.The most basic vehicle has less to go wrong with it.

2nd the 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty starts the day the vehicle was put into service,so if yours was put into service(1st owner drove off the lot is "put into service") in july of '07 then it expires in july of '10 or when it reaches 36,000 miles if sooner then 3 years.They did not lie to you saying it still was under warranty,they just left out that it had less then 30 days of warranty left,sneeky but not a lie by any means.


Oh and a TSB is on your dime if out of warranty.


And yes the 42RLE is based off a 30 year old design,it works,not well but it works and it's cheap.It would cost alot more to put a better trans in and they wanted to keep the price low.

I would go to a different Jeep Dealer and tell them the problem, if it is a 2008 w 28k miles, all those TBS should be free. Don't go buying the tank yourself if you can get it for free. If denied warranty I would ask for corporate number so I can escalate the situation. At 28k miles and on a vehicle that is model 2008. I don't care the excuse of when I bought it. Maybe they should not have called it a 2008 if that is the case.
Take it to a different dealer, and don't mention when you bought it.

Very true, Dirty. Me too. In fact I just ordered some new stuff for it. I'll keep that in the bag for now though. Let's just say you and I are going a completely different way with our mods.

I wheeled the crap outta my XJ. It begged for more and I never broke a thing except for when a flexed tire bent an untrimmed fender. The Libby won't get wheeled though. It will be lucky if it ever sees a dirt road. Snow bashing will be about as far as it's wheeling days will get.

BTW, thats not tooooo bad a price on that fuel tank if I have to do it though. I'm sure the dealer will want $500-$700 if they do it. I would never have the dealer do something I'm perfectly capable of. Ok, except maybe change the oil. I am lazy afterall.

Good call on the oil filter. I bet thats where the leak is coming from. I'll check it out when I get some time to dive in.

Well, I bet tjkj2002, is right, on all of it. I just think it would be worth the argument w them or corporate. I never knew about that, good info to know. Something else to look at when looking at the carfax. Thanks tjkj2002 for the good info.

Yep just because it's a model year 2008 does not mean it was not built and put into service in '08,heck there are model year 2002 KJ's that where built in march of 2001 but they are still model year 2002's.

They may warranty some of the things but do not get your hopes high as you are the 2nd owner,if you were the 1st owner it would be a totally different thing and your chances would be very great.

I have the same issue. If you leave it alone it will turn off about 5 or 6 wipes. I'm thinking it could be a bad relay but I never looked into it. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow morning, I'll see what they say about it.

The issue with the Nav is that if you don't spell what your looking for EXACTLY as it should it doesn't search right ... Example, if your looking for Moes you have to spell is with the ' ... Moe's. There are some new firmware updates for it that help a little but yes the Navi is a PITA



My guess would that no one has done a brake job on the truck yet and its due. Check that out ...

i had a similar brake issue and one of the slide pins boot was torn and full of gunk and was not opening the caliper back up after letting off the brakes because of it. took it all apart, sprayed down with brake parts cleaner and cleaned it up. re-lubed the pin and replaced the boot and everything has been good since.

Mike, let me know what the dealer says about the wiper if you wouldn't mind. That ios one thing I would definitely like to correct soon. Funny thing is that It snowed this morning here in Denver and I had the rear wiper on all the way to work. Of course, it turned off exactly as it should have for once.

I know how you feel. I thought I was buying a new and modern XJ. (Mine's a 1996) The KK isn't even half the vehicle the XJ was. I have a 08 KK with 35k on it and I drive my 190k XJ more than I drive the KK. Sure the KK rides and handles better than the XJ but it doesn't seen nearly as "solid" a truck.

If I turn my rear wiper on without the front wipers being on, the only way to get it to turn off is to turn the front ones on and then back off. That will kill the rear wiper.

I've had all the tranny flashes done and the 1-2 valve body replaced and mine still feels like the tranny is going to jump out of the truck when the fluid is very cold and it shifts from 1st to 2nd (going in for warranty for the 3rd time on this problem on Tuesday). Does anyone know if a bad tranny fluid temp sensor could be to blame???? I've run out of ideas and I'm o for 3 with three different dealerships.

There was recently a thread posted about fixing the skyslider by adding a thicker seal, dunno if you have seen it. Hope you get all the quirks fixed so you don't feel like you're driving $30k paper weight. Good luck.
