Post subject:  Gas Mileage Improvement?

Hello all,
My mom has a 2009 KK that she loves but has one problem: the mileage is less than to be desired. Often she takes long highway trips (200+ miles) and is getting around 15 or 16 mpg. She doesn't have a lead foot or anything but wanted to know if anyone has had any success with aftermarket products or any other suggestions. Thanks.

I'm not attempting to be a smart booty, but Cruise control worked for me quite a bit. It evens out your RPMs and helps maintain speed. Other than that I feel the KK is less aerodynamic that the KJ so thus wastes more. :2cents:

Thats average for the 3.7. Winter fuel will also give you less MPGs. Jeeps arnt made to get good MPGs, except the compass and patriot

THat is not great...

I know our 2008 gets 20 to 22 highway milage.

What I do is pump up the PSI in the tires.
36 cold to 41 cold, give me the most.. Tires max is rated at 50 PSI, so I am in the safe zone.
Look at her tires and adjust.. Jeep says 31, but that is to meet all sorts of test across the board.

Also make sure the Air filter is clean or replaced.
Use gass from name brand stations.
Check the Oil and make sure it is not to old...

Also make sure she is not carring a ton of extra crapp in the back for no reason.

Also taking to a good 5 star dealer and see if there are any recalls or software updates.
Might help...

I take impeccable care of my 10 liberty and as well only get 15-17 mpg. As far as im concerned it is what it is. I replaced the spark plugs and got a smoother accelerate and idle and a little better fuel mileage but over all its about the same. I dont know that id pump more air into my tires though..the stock tires are terrible in the snow and rain so i would rather have more rubber on the road than less at the expense of fuel usage. But to each their own. :SOMBRERO:

I've been getting like 12.5- 13.5mpg lately. Its been brutally cold and I'm always using 4wd in the snow and I live at 6300 ft elevation.

There are a lot of factors that affect the fuel mileage of our KK's. Simple little things running the front defroster can kill mileage to differances in tires. Also total payload, temperature, wind and other things affect it. Also, if she has less then 5K on it, the motor is still not broken in.

On the tires PSI bumped. that can only be done, when it is safe and needed..

If you are on snowy roads, or off road, or in conditions that this will be a negative effect, then do not over inflate your tires......

I do it as where I live we have dry roads 80% of the time.

Rules for Liberty MPG:

1. Inflate tires to 40PSI. No more, no less.
2. Cruise Control
3. Travel as light as possible, don't need ________? Don't bring it.
4. Keep up on maintenance.
5. Pray that your 3.7L has more than 10k on it, screw 5k, even after 5k it's STILL going to guzzle. At around 20k, a 3.7L will be done with its first set of spark plugs despite what the owner's manual says.
6. Don't go faster than 70MPH.

I recently averaged 22MPG coming back home through mountains, hills, etc. 2 passengers, and enough crap for 3.

(Paper calculation was .1MPG off of EVIC)

BTW: The KK is actually MORE aerodynamic than the KJ. Not by much though, sadly I don't have the numbers in front of me.

Just pulled in, using parttime 4 and getting 17.4mpg, cold and windy as hell, was getting 19.4 yesterday. Just bought a scanguage, I high recommend it, lots of useful information.

Wow, that's some harsh mileage! I took a trip out to Missouri, and got as high as 24-25 MPG, with the cruise on at 65-70. In the city is where I get eaten alive

Don't feel so bad  I used to commute 180 miles weekly to see my girlfriend, so I thought if I stopped, I'd be saving a ton on gas. Surprise! I spend way more than I used to haha.

Cruise Control is your friend (well its mine at least :ROTFL: )
keep your tires infated at the right level
and up grade to a better air filter like a K&N or get a full CAI
just my :2cents:

Just curious, but why would the front defroster kill mileage? I thought it was just a different set of vents for the heat to blow out of. Not sure I could shut mine off anyway since my windshield seems to fog up quickly in the winter if I shut it off, but that comment piqued my interest.

Post subject:  Re: Gas Mileage Improvement?

For a defroster to wok best it has to do what?

Thats right remove the Water..

How do you remove water in a Jeep?,

Thats right you run the AC.

If you run the AC you put a strain on the motor and it in turn uses more Gas.

I hope this help...

If you can run your front defroster without the AC, then you will not loose MPG...

Post subject:  Re: Gas Mileage Improvement?

Even if you run the defrost with out the AC indicator light on, it still cycles the compressor. This is a feature that was built in to cars to run the AC system in the winter that way none of the seals dry out

My defrost is used as an engine brake when going down hills. I take my foot off the gas pedal and turn on the defrost. It will immediately slow down the rig about 2 to 5 MPH, depending on how steep the hill. Really is a sad way to decelerate, I know. But it works....:juggle:

Post subject:  Re: Gas Mileage Improvement?

Hmm, now that you mention it my Sunfire actually had separate settings for defrost with and without ac. I kind of wondered when I got my Jeep, but I suppose if it's on all the time there's no need. I'll have to remember that because my mileage has been pretty terrible in the winter and that probably isn't helping.
