A similar thing happened to my father last week with his '06 Grand Cherokee. It turned out his was in "Limp In" mode (that's what the dealership told him it was called). His was a transmission issue but either way she should probably get it to a dealership ASAP if it's not in 4 low as others have suggested. He was told by the dealership that Limp In/Home only works for a certain amount of miles (can't remember how much) before the whole thing shuts down to prevent total destruction.
If it's an '08 it probably won't be under warranty anymore unless she got en extended full or powertrain warranty when she purchased it.
Good Luck
Dez
