Anyone have any good/cheap roof rack bars to buy for the Liberty? I found these but I dont know anything about prices.

http://www.justforjeeps.com/sputba4.html

I know this has been talked about numerous times, but I have not seen much that I like. I am look for something low profile, sturdy, chrome, and decent price. I have to get a new kayak as well and kayak carrier so prices are important as I am probably looking to spend over $1,000 for all of this with a new kayak.

I am still interested in the ones from Mopar because of the price, but I am curious about any reviews of this product. Thanks

Just make some. There are many, many, many threads on them in the fabrication section.

I like them because they are flat and hold stuff better than the factory style that has an arch.

Pretty much how I did mine too. I used Vac line caps to cover the thread left after I cut the U bolts to 1/4" sticking up. End caps or plugs are a must if you use pipe, unless you want to sound like a jug band going down the road. Looks better that way too.

I bought a pair on Ebay for $55.00 and wish I didn't. I wasn't expecting much for $55.00 but was hoping for something better. They are poor quality from China , the bars are made of lite weight aluminum. And the locks will fall apart if your not careful. Once you have them secured in place they will hold tight. But would not trust the lite weight bars to hold much. My last roof bars were Thule and the quality and strength was far greater. They will do for a sheet of plywood but not much more. I would not recomend them.

I have hauled a little on mine and have had no problems. Weight wise not that much but they have served me well so far. like they said for 55.00 you can't expect bars that will carry a ton

Would those ebay bars be strong enough to hold a kayak?

i THINK SO

I would not because the aluminum bars are not that strong and the maximum distance between bars is 36". That would be a lot of leverage for the lite weight bars. If the bars were spread apart wider and the kayak was very lite weight you could try, it may work. But there is no way to spread the bars further apart. This is my own opinion.

I use Thule. Quick on and off as I need them. Plenty strong for carrying canoe/kayaks either strapped directly to bars or using carriers. I know they're not the style you are looking for, but the quality is certainly there. Skin-inc has a nice set up with low profile bars and fold down kayak carriers from Thule. You can see photos of that nice looking rig under suspension set up or wheel/tire sticky area.

Here is a link to a photo of what Skininc69 uses for rails/kayak carrier in the KK tech section under wheels/tires. Pretty slick set up. I really like the folding component of the carriers.

Post subject:  Re: Roof Cross Rails

I would like to add cross bars to the roof of my 08 KK Sport, but the stock (vertical) rails don't appear to be able to hold cross bars. The vertical rails on mine are more like plastic bumpers that sit on the roof. Is this just a plastic cover that pops off to reveal the actual rails underneath? Does anyone else have these?

This image is not my Jeep, but it has the same stock rails I am describing. I do not have the sky slider on mine.
