Hi All, Just wanted to check to see if it seems reasonable to replace the rear rotors at 36,000 miles. The pads were worn a little thin but they still passed inspection so I would assume that the rotors shouldn't have needed to be replaced just the pads. Is this incorrect or is it just standard for the dealership to replace the rotors when they replace the pads. I thought that $400 for just the rear was a little excessive. Thanks, DIDS |

were the rotors warped or anything? 36,000 is not many miles on a set of brakes. It seems the KKs are harder on brakes than the Kjs or maybe the owners are just harder on them Some places consider a complete brake job as replacing everything, also the calipers My stock rears lasted over 100,000 and still had some life left in them |

I was getting my inspection done and they called and said the pads were thin but would pass inspection. I told them to replace them anyway figuring that it would save the rotors from damage when the pads finally wore out. Sounds like replacing the rotors is standard practice when replacing the pads. So I assume $400 is a reasonable price for the pads and rotors on the rear correct? Thanks, DIDS |

Did you see them yourself? I find it hard to believe "rear" pads and rotors gone in 36k. What wears 1st is always the front brakes, that's what stops you and unless you have a heavy foot resting on the brake pedal, 36k on any vehicle is very short. |

Just went with what the dealer told me (I know big mistake but I am not very mechanically inclined). I am not heavy on the brake, I am much the opposite. When coming to a red light I coast to it so it turns green before I get there. That way I don't have to touch the brakes saving wear on them and MPG's. |

For the rears to go before the fronts would indicate to me pre-mature wear due to something dragging the rear brakes. If I were you, I'd drive the Jeep foward real slow less than 10 mph windows down radio off, next to a concrete wall or building and put it in neutral at about 5-10 mph, flat ground and let it slow down by itself, listening for any noise coming from rear that may reflect off building or wall. If it does seem to coast out of gear normally, no sounds of dragging brakes, "need" to get another shops opinion on the brakes and have a look yourself. I'd do that before spending $400. for rear brake job that may not be necessary. |

I can't speak to the pricing, but if you do a search on here for rear brakes, many, many threads come up. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=88&t=50058&hilit=rear+brakes The KKs ESP program chews up rear pads very quickly, some people are going through them in <25kmiles. |

On a KK the Rear always wears faster due to it being RWD and ESP useing the brakes to stop wheel spin. 36K its about average for most people on a KK. I did mine all around at about 31K and didnt need to do the rotors. Some dealers will have a "Service Special" where they will use Mopar Pads and the front/back will cost about 130 each total. So if you dont know how to do them or dont want to you can get em done for about 260ish. |

Man, people with KK's getting brakes done that early, I don't know. I've been driving for 40+ years, cars, trucks, suv's, rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, 2 w.d. 4 w.d. a.b.s. etc. never had an issue with rear brakes wearing out before the fronts. Leads me to believe Daimler Chrysler may have used some inferior mat'l. in the pads for the rear. Right now one of the cars I have is a 06 CRD with 65k+ miles on it, never had to touch the brakes yet. Got a new set of tires 3 months ago and looked at the pads at that time and they still looked like they had 10-15k left on them. |

replaced mine at 80,000 miles, but most of my driving is highway. Front brakes are just fine. And yes rears wear out faster due to traction control - if you spin rear tires brakes are applied. I did replace rotors and pads my self total bill was 187.00 |

I mean no disrespect... BUT with all your 40 years of driving how many of the year has trucks or cars or Jeep with ESP? bhc04 wrote: Man, people with KK's getting brakes done that early, I don't know. I agree that 20K or 36K on read brakes SUCKS..... I hate seeing people with this issue... But this is the new normal now that ESP is going in on so many cars, trucks and Jeeps..... Lets justhope it get imporoved soon and or Brake makers come up with a better pad for us that works well.... |

Instead if having cars and trucks with a 80/20 front/rear split in braking power, manufactures have moved to a 60/40 or even 40/60. I just did rear pads on my moms jetta with 26K. If you do a little research on them, the rears wear due to a 40/60 split in braking and TCS. On the KK's, I would say it is a 60/40 and yes, the TCS/ESP does wear out the rears first. Rotor wise, I have head Chryco products have moved to a "one time use" rotor. Meaning that by the time you do your pads, you can't turn the rotors with out taking them out of spec. |
