OK, here we go ...
You can buy direct from Coastal Tech but they are located in Florida and I didn't want to pay sales tax on top of it so I bought it from a dealer of theirs on eBay. It was a few bucks cheaper and no tax. It was also a good thing I did buy it on eBay as you will read below.
I bought the LockPick CHR550 (
http://www.coastaletech.com/CHR550.htm) to use with my new RHB radio and to say the least it didn't work as advertised. My main problems were coming with the iPod control. You use your steering wheel mount audio controls to operate the iPod. The problems I was having is I would hit the "down" control to get to a song but it would jump 3 or 4 songs with 1 press of the button. Also if I hit the "select" button it would operate 3 or 4 times.
I called Coastal about the problem and they asked me if I updated the LockPick I said YES. They asked me if I've updated my iPod recently and I said YES. They proceeded to tell me they don't know why that is happening and I should "Power Down" my iPod and restart it every time I hook it up, that's not annoying
I continued to have problems with it and it's to the point of I can't use it. I got in touch with the seller on eBay to request a return. I explain to him my problem and A WEEK LATER, he tells me Coastal will NOT warranty they unit just for the "Jumpy" iPod controls. I explain to him again I can't use it and I'm not keeping something I can use 100% as it should.
So I had to start a claim with eBay and PayPal against the seller to get my money back. Once the claim was open this is what I got from the seller.
"I have done a lot of research on the unit and I will swap it for you however the problem may still exist unless you update your software on the MYGIG radio. The "jumpy controls" are not being caused by the lockpick. You may also need to remove the latest update from the IPOD. Again I will swap units but the problem is not with the CHR-550. Thanks"So I respond with
"I'm sorry but that is NOT acceptable. I have a new 2011 Jeep with the newest MyGig RHB radio and software. There is NO update for it. Also I shouldn't have to modify or "remove" any updates from my iPod. That is not a good answer. My iPod works perfect on my aftermarket Pioneer AVIC radio that I have in my work truck and it also works perfect with my Yamaha home theater adapter. This is 100% the Lockpick not working. I want a refund."Needless to say the seller went quiet and eBay stepped in and is giving me my refund and they will deal with the seller. If I would have bought from Coast Tech direct I fell I would have been up the creek without a paddle and stuck with a defective unit. From this situation it doesn't seem like they had any intentions on giving me my money back.
I know the seller was limited on what he could do because he was just the middle man but Coastal Tech has horrible customer service and clearly tried to blame everything else except their unit.
DO NOT BUY FROM COASTAL TECH!!!
