Hi,

I have a 2008 KK with factory installed side steps. It seems as though the bolts that hold the plastic steps to the tubular steel are starting to corrode, it almost looks like the bolts might be aluminum and it is galvanic corrosion. Has anyone else experienced this and if so how did you fix it. I tried to remove one of the bolts but it just spun so I assume there must be a nut on the back side, and only accessable by taking an end cap off the tube. I'm also working on replacement via the warranty but I assume it will just happen again.

Thanks

Scott

Wish I could help, but I don't have the factory side rails....

no worries digger, I wasn't going to get them either but they came with the package.

Jeepin, sorry good point, I have the black ones, the bolts are completely corroded, I was thinking of replacing them with stainless but didnt know if anyone else had any luck with replacement bolts of that style, I'll take a pic tommorow and upload it. I know if I don't do something at this point its only going to get worse

heres some pics of it, I think there is a nut that holds the bolts in, I'm going to look a little bit further on the weekend but I think that it is accessable by removing the end caps, and by using a really long, or even custom, wrench to get to the middle ones.

Yes, they come with a warranty as long as you had the dealer install them.( at least in Canada ) I was told dealership installed items were covered under the same 3 yr. Bumper-to-Bumper warranty. The threaded Nut is a pressed in grommet.( with srrated sides like a wheel stud )The bolts are fastened with removable "Loc-tite". ( Blue ) Unless you`re very lucky ( or you heat up the bolt Lightly ) you`ll spin the Grommet and you`ll NEVER get them off ! I actually had one spin so, I told him it came loose, and could NOT be removed or tightened, which was even more cause for them to be replaced. I used an ALLEN wrench, imserted into the Bolt ( on the NEW ones ) then heated it up, then un-threaded them all and replaced them ALL with S/S Bolts. I have the "Chromed Aluminum" and the rusted heads looked like doo doo. I advised the Dealership it wasn`t a very , let`s say " Approvable" look to representing a Chrysler promoted accessary, so he swapped them out , then I changed the bolts. Good luck.

Just a thought but if you had go you could drill from the bottom with a unibit to gain access to the nut. Then put one of those plastic hole covers in the hole. Just seemed like a good idea if the dealer doesn't cover them. :2cents:

Definitely a cure for the problem but, as I stated before, they are serrated, pressed in grommet/round nuts, NOT a hex Nut. Might be a little harder to hold onto. ( especially with Blue Loc-tite on them )

I would call the dealer and see what they say first. As was stated above, they might cover it as it was installed by them. I know if you tear into it and do something, they won't cover it at all once you start.
