i bought a cheepo off of ebay and put a good kn filter on it. filter sits in the bottom of the factory airbox. good sound. think it may have lost some low end power/torque but gained in the higher rpm's |

viewtopic.php?f=104&t=62262 here is the thread with all the pictures. I recently took off the side steps because they didnt do any thing and the lift is more noticeable. LOVE the tires though. lost about 4 mpg, going from 20 to 16..hence the desire to get the intake! haha |

Intake will never get back the mileage no matter what they advertise. Good filter in the stock box is best and no not a K&N, |

Just curouis how it will not get back MPG, i know id have to drive like a poke..but i already do..im probably close to wearing out my cruise control! haha |

I have yet to find anything other than a cheap-o filter for the KK that isn't a K&N. If someone knows of one I'd love to hear about it. |

any stock paper filter from most any parts store is better than a K&N. Haven't looked but does Amsoil make one for the KK? They do a great job. I went through the whole CAI/ K&N/ Brute/ etc back to stock box with Amsoil which does way better than anything else I used as far as power and mileage |

I returned my k&n the next day no differance in performance or at least very little gain. I did replace my paper with a ams oil filter last month works fine Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk |

I've been waiting for them to release an Ea filter for the KK practically since I got mine, but they still don't list one on the site.

sooooo from what im gathereing there is no hope of increased horse power and or torque wtih an intake... that seems counter intuitive gents! Im sure there is something im not getting considering a lot of this is still new to me, only over the last year or so of ownership have i learned the ins and outs of the suspension..and still dont know what the heck a clevis lift really is.. So i would greatly appreciate some info on the intakes, as in what makes the performance ones less affective as the OEM box and standard filter. Thanks! Cheers

Just another thing to note, with a CAI you run a higher risk of sucking water into your engine and seizing it when off-roading. |

@ gren71 Putting a K&N filter on a motor is essentially making it easier for the engine to breath. Anything that makes your engine breath better (high flow filter, cold air intake, turbo/super charger, exhaust...) is good for performance but bad for gas milage. This is because the better an engine breaths or the more air you push through the engine, the more fuel you need to keep the mixture the same. On that note, putting a high flow air filter on will only do so much for performance by itself. All of the parts work together. If you open up the intake on an engine, you can't get that much power unless you unrestrict the exhaust too. If you open up the intake and exhaust, you need a chip to adjust the fuel mixture properly for the added air flow. Also, the drawback to a high flow air filter is that, well, they don't filter as well. If you live in a very dusty area, you may not want to put one on. |

Very good explanation, thanks much. With that logic couldn't i put a "tighter" filter in and get better gas mileage? just a thought. Im not really looking for more mpg all the way just more fun..its a jeep and i know its terrible on gas any way haha. I intend to get an intake, muffler, and eventually the jet stage 2 chip. Should work? |

| Post subject: | Re: Intake options |
Restricting your intake probably won't help your MPGs either. The motor is to an extent tuned for the airfilter thats on there and putting something on that is more restrictive will just make the motor run too rich. In an extreme case that would result in more unburnt fuel (as there isn't enough oxygen to finish combustion) reducing the efficiency of the motor. Also, I should have specified before but my previous post is just a rule of thumb. I'm sure there are some situations where an intake can improve MPGs, just like I've heard some people say they saw improvement after putting a snorkle on. You can usually expect a performance increase from a new filter, but it's effect on MPG can be hit or miss. Just an example, but on my Triumph motorcycle I put a intake, exhaust, petcock and rejetted the carburators (a petcock and jets are how you increase fuel flow in a carburated motor) and my MPG dropped from 50 to 35. I wouldn't expect to see that drastic of a drop in your jeep, but definitely do the research on the parts your looking at before you drop the coin. I know there is nothing specific in there, but I haven't fiddled with the performance side of my jeep so I can't really talk about that in particular. Anyhow, hope that helped at all. |

Appreciate the intel! I know there wil be an increase in both mpg an performance. I'm still lookIng into it but definaty more than I knew before. |

The MPG drops with modified exhaust because the kid in all of us comes out when we hear the roar, which makes us gas it more often On my old WJ, I ran a Magnaflow 70 strictly for making more ground clearance than a stock muffler. I agree with you Tommudd, the K&N drop-in has big enough holes to let more particles into your engine, I found out the hard way...
