So when I parked next to an XJ with 31 x 10.5 tires I noticed he seeemed like he had a lot more ground clearance than my KK with 245/75/16.

Why is that? I thought that bigger tires were the biggest factor for ground clearance? Is it just my eyes playing tricks on me?

When it comes to axle ground clearance, tires are the only factor. If you were looking at the height of the rockers or anything but the axles, its just the design of the xj.

According to Jeep Brochures:

XJ Ground Clearence = 11.7 in (measured to tcase) or
10.45 in (measured to tcase skid)

KK Ground Clearence = 7.8 in (no details about where it is measured)

Ground clearance is measured at the lowest point under the vehicle which in the case between the Xj and KK is the rear diff.Since most XJ's also use the 8.25 diff if the KK and XJ have the same sized tires there ground clearance is exactly the same since the rear diffs are the same.

I agree with you tjkj2002, that sounds like the right way to measure. I was just reading from brochures, it doesn't seem like they use consistant method.
