So as the title suggests id LOVe to move the spare...

Some thoghts are to stick it inside on the passenger side to try and level out the weight of the tank.

Find a rear mount tire arm to finagle an attachment to the bumper.

Ive seen the thread on here with the one for the cherokee and it looks great, but judging by the lack of intel and that most seem pesimistic about it i dont think that will happen.

Any thoughts?

You don't have a lot of options.
1 - Roof rack (I think Digger has his spare up on one)
2 - Spend a lot of time and money custom fabing a rear tire swing
3 - Put it in the truck and deal with a smelly tire inside the truck. Also you don't really have a good way of securing the tire inside, just a few points for a small ratchet strap
4 - Leave it where it is

I think the best question is, what do you have the time and/or money for?

Here are some of the things i found, Fallow the below links..

It seems like these will require a LOT of modification. Im not against that but id love to think i could make it happen with a little inguinity.

All good options and im sure ill PROBABLY end up leaving it where it is, but id like to think i can make it happen haha. :SOMBRERO:

I couldnt imagine that it would be unbelievable expensive to weld a mount to the metal bumper under the stock rear one...?

Keep up your search Gren! I think a rear tire carrier would look sharp on the back of the KK. I, however, wheel the KK too infrequently and use the rear hatch way too frequently to make it a practicle option for me. Now, my 98 G.C. carried the spare vertically in the rear. There was a mount welded somewhere to the inside of the driver's side rear quarter panel that extended through the plastic trim panel. A threaded bolt swiveled out and through the center of the spare. Tire held in place by oversized wingnut (for lack of better term) Very secure. Tire easily removed when needing extra room. I like your idea of an interior mount to help counter balance the gas tank. I'd go for something like mounted on the passenger side of the cargo area. Woo Hoo!

Oh ya, the GC I had was a limited with leather interior. I only wheeled it through a creek ONCE and I never let any mud or dirt on the inside. :ROTFL: I kept the spare and its cover slicked up with Armoral. No smelly spare tires for me in that one! Woo Hoo!

Actually its not bad swinging the tire carrier out of the way. When I first got the RL bumper with spare tire swing out I thought it maybe as well. But now I don't even think about it. Anytime I haul anything or even go somewhere overnight with luggage etc it gets thrown in the back, swing the spare out open the door maybe takes 10 seconds more so no problems. Soon I'll have both swings to deal with but don't see it as an issue

Point well taken Tom. I guess like anything its all a matter of getting used to it. I've just never had that feature on a vehicle. I still think it would look sharp though.

Yeah I have dual swing out arms and I often get into the back of my KJ.I don't even think about it anymore, like Tom say's it takes about 10secs to open them.

It says it's rated as a CL IV. The only thing to keep in mind is that it looks like it relocates the hitch up a few inches. Looks pretty sweet.

Looks to be around $400 though...

EDIT: My bad, $690. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up.

Ive really been giving this some serious thought and Im taking a closer look at the metal bumper under the OEM to see if there is a practical place to attempt to maybe weld a mount on.

Has any one done any mods to the KK rear bumper that doesn't require a full replacement?

Does the KK rear bumper have any metal in it. I have drilled all the way through the rear bumper on the kj and there is nothing there to mount to, just plastic. Now there is some steel on the backside but there is a space between it and the plastic bumper.

Havnt really taken a look but im sure there is some metal there i can play with. Ill see if i can find skimatics, i think digger has them on the forums some where.

There's metal under there in the uni-body, but I think you would need to reinforce it with a large metal plate before tapping the area to receive the swing arm. There's a lot of leverage on that mounting point when that arm is swung open with a tire on it and I think you would need to distribute the weight or it will tear itself off your Jeep. An underside of not having a "true" frame.

Post subject:  Re: Id LOVE to move the spare..thoughts.

Another thing to think about with relocating your spare: from what I have seen, many manufacturers factor in the ability of the spare to absorb an impact when it was placed in the location it is under the rear of the vehicle. This also goes for trunk-stored spares. Removing the spare from its current location could allow significantly more damage to the vehicle in a rear end collision. This may not seem important until you are driving and your trunk gets crushed into your gas tank.... and Boom!!!!
Any engineers out there- please correct me if I am wrong with this. I have been to a lot of accidents and one of the most common ones is the inattentive driver slamming into the back of the car in front of them. You can always tell who didn't have a spare underneath, or a "donut" in the trunk, their trunk would be completely crushed from the impact.
My train of thought is that by having the spare where it is, Jeep does not have to add more steel to the rear end to strengthen the rear end in order to meet federal standards. In other words, it's a cheap way for the vehicle to have stronger impact resistance because of a large hunk of steel or aluminum with an inflated rubber "bumper" wrapped around it under the rear of the vehicle. Think about it before you move it. Do you use your spare that much to where you need it to be more accessible?

The rear structure of the KK is really strong. I have been rear ended by both a Tahoe (Totaled) and a Chevy Lumina (Totaled). While the tahoe ate my rear hatch, the hitch took 90% of the impact with the tahoe and 100% with lumina.

Oh, I have no doubt that the hitch mounted tire carrier would do great. If it weren't so much money, I would jump on that one right now! Unless I misunderstood though, Gren was considering one of the bolt-on ones.

Digger, do you think a bolt on one would work without reinforcement of the area? In all honesty, this is my first unibody vehicle and I'm still trying to figure out its limits.
