Post subject:  Skyslider roof and towing

Hello All,

So U-haul told me because we have a Skyslider we should never tow the more than 3,500 LBS.
Is this true?

Or is this just another myth...

Looking for input from you all...

Thanks.

And I did not search for this topic...

I have a Sky Slider and have towed over that without ill effect. I would like to think that Jeep would have put something out if it effected towing capacity.

U haul does not allow you to tow if you have a soft top (like on a Wrangler). Every time I tell them I have Jeep they ask if it is a soft top. Maybe they now have a policy for semi-convertible vehicles? According to their web site, U haul states,"Must be equipped with a hard top if it is an SUV or Jeep. U-Haul does not allow any type of sport-utility vehicle not equipped with a hard top to tow U-Haul equipment." So I would guess that based on this they shouldn't let you rent a trailer with a sky slider since it is not a hard top. I wouldn't question them too much or they might not let you rent the trailer. Also show up with the sky slider in the closed position.

Last 2 times I've moved I've used a uhaul trailer. They've never said anything to me about the sky slider being an issue. It might have something to do with the specific uhaul that you go to.

I don't think it really has anything to do with the Skyslider. But I noted the above policy quoted by jon153.
When I worked for them the main policy was "The curb weight of your tow vehicle must be at least 80% of the loaded weight of the trailer", and no soft tops.
Hard top convertible, T tops, and Sun roofs were OK.
The wrangler was completely out because of it's short wheel base.

With the Liberty curb weight 4x4 @ 3692 lbs and 4x2 @ 3507 I am amazed they said that 3500 Lbs would be OK (but that is also what is in the owners manual).
With the 80% rule a 4x4 =3397 Lbs towing and a 4x2 =3226 Lbs towing.

Not to say the Liberty can't handle much more that that, with an experienced driver...
But they are covering their backsides. Also on that note, they write down the license plate number of the vehicle the trailer leaves the lot on, just in case someone is planning on picking up a trailer with one rig, then hooking it to another for the tow.
