Hi-- I'm ready to pull the trigger on new tires but I'm nervous about going with 255/70r16 since I am going to mail order. My kk is stock with stock rims and is a 2010 with 40,000 miles. Is it accepted that this size fits with only minor rubbing? I'm not interested in a lift for this Jeep and don't want to do any cutting like I did on my KJ but I think 255/70r16 all terrains will be the best size for beach driving and on road handling. Thanks!

Actually Mike it has been addressed 2 or 3 times and only on low mile kk's as far i can see using search. Other forums claim they do not fit, and they do not fit on KJ's. I was hoping for some clarification before shelling out $600 on tires I can't return.

255 70's will rub without a lift. Even with my lift I still get an ever so slight rub at full turning lock of the steering wheel. Nothing that bothers me though as I usually do a 2 pt. turn if the space is that tight. 245 70's is largest acceptable size without lift from what I have read on this forum. Depending on how packed the sand is, you can always air down and use lower gear. You'll just need a way of refilling the air in your tires. I lifted first before changing out the stock size tires to the 255's so I can't speak as to how well they fit without a lift. I hope this helps with your tire choice. Sorry if I have muddied the waters. Keep us posted what your decision is and how well things work. Happy :JEEPIN:

Thanks! I can live with a little rubbing at full lock. Has anyone had problems with this size without a lift?

I took a quick look over in the Tyres, tires, meats, donuts, and wheel section and there was a recent posting of someone mounting 255 65 17's without a lift and not having any issues. Those have a total diameter pretty much the same as 255 70 16's. About 30.5" tall tire. He did do 2 small mods to get it to work. A clevis lift and pounding down the pinch weld in the front wheel bay. Maybe give that section a look see for anymore info or even post up over there. :2cents:

Obviously saying it's been address 1000 times is sarcastic. The "will this tire fit on my stock KK" has been asked for just about every size you would want to put on a stock KK. Also, you just answered your own question. It's been said they don't fit on a low mileage KK ... So even if you get just a little bit of sag because of having 40,000 miles they defiantly won't work on yours.

I was hoping to hear from more people actually running this size. If the thread annoys you then don't follow it and allow me to communicate with people who have dome helpful information to share and keep your sarcasm to yourself. If it was obvious they wouldn't fit on my Jeep I wouldn't be wasting everyones' time on this.

I have done extensive searchs all over the Internet and very few people are running this size on unlifted kk's with stock rims. So far I have found 2 or 3 on this forum running them successfully but they are low mile rigs. However, I have found no examples anywhere of people who tried it and had problems while using stock rims. There is lots of information about 245/75r16's, but even those seem to be hit or miss.

My gut feeling is that they will fit but with some minor rubbing at full lock but as I stated previously I'd like to hear from more people who tried it.

Years ago I was one of the first to put 245/70r16's with 16x8 cragar's on my unlifted KJ. They fit but only after pounding the pinch weld and cutting the flares due to the increased width a backspacing. I was able to post detailed infotmation that I'm sure many KJ owners have found informative. I'm not willing to cut or pound my KK until it gets a little older so I am hoping to learn from other owner's experiences.

I like my KK but miss the aftermarket support and wealth of technical support I enjoyed with my XJ and ZJ and to a lesser extent my KJ.

Personally I would not even try
Pick a size that will fit like 245-7-s or get a lift
Sagged out suspension and larger tires= problems
Of course sounds like you have your mind set on trying them so .....good luck
Oh and only going to the mall down a straight road they may not rub real bad

My mind is definitely not made up-- just looking to make an informed decision to fit the largest size possible to make my Jeep more capable on the beach and at least 3 people on this site are successfully running them stock.

I see that 235/75r16's are a lot cheaper, fit without issues, and almost as tall so I may go that route rather than roll the dice. Aired down they should be wide enough with the added benefit of improved snow and wet road traction.

When I drive on the beach with 225/75's the belly and difs drag on the berm between the tracks so I need all the height I can get. 245/70's or 255/65 will give me the width but not the height.

Obviously a lift and 245/75r16 would solve my problem but I don't want to open a can of worms with a spacer lift as the thing I like most about my KK is the smooth ride and a full spring lift isn't in the budget.

I guess the reality is that all these sizes are so close that it's splitting hairs. I'm going with Hankook ATM's, Cooper AT3's, or Big O Bigfoot A/T, whichever I can get the best deal on.

Overall you are not going to gain but maybe 1/4 inch at most anyways
Not enough to make much of a difference at all when you are sinking down in sand
Just get a good tire that will handle sand and be done
look real closely at those who run them and see how much actual flex room they have in the wheelwells in front, not much

You won't "open a can of worms" with a spacer lift. There are a lot of people on this site running the Daystar Lift or the Rock Krawler lift and don't have any ride quality issues. Both of those are budget lifts and will give you the extra hight you need. I ran the Rock Krawler lift on my 08 and didn't have any problems with the ride quality, just as good as stock. A bigger, especially wider tire like a 255, with NO lift and stock wheels will give you nothing but problems because there won't be any room left in the fender for the suspension to flex.

I would LOVE to just run a spacer lift but I've seen so much information on here and other forums that they hasten wear on the springs and can cause other issues that I'm wary.

It looks like the Rock Krawler and Daystar use different methods to achieve lift. Maybe one is better than the other? I successfully used Rusty's budget boost on my XJ (front spacer and rear extended shackles) but that suspension was much simpler.

Before you even think anymore about cheap junk spacer lifts do more research on them
Two of the KKs that come to my place on a regular basis tried going the cheap route and soon went to full spring lift, and report way better ride and handling
The people who say that spacer lifts are OK have never tried anything better that lasts longer and rides better
You get what you pay for cheap is cheap
