Post subject:  2010 KK Sport Audio System Upgrade

Hi, first post from a long time reader.mhas anyone upgraded their sound system on a KK? I am looking at changing all speakers and adding a subwoofer and an amplifier. I have been told this is not possible without changing the head unit. Is this true? I would like to keep the factory one.

Also has anyone experienced any electrical problems at all after doing so? I have been warned that the com bus system can be a pain, and I in no way want to compromise the reliability of the electrics!

Any help/advice would be appreciated!

I believe that isomswim did a significant audio upgrade over the weekend and posted about removing his rear seat to run some wires. You might try pm-ing him.

Hey KKblack,

While I have not added the sub or amp, I have changed all the speakers to after market ones (Alpine's...see sig). The head unit was not changed.

This was done back in 2009 and as of today, still no issues and works perfectly. (not sure about adding a sub and amp though)

Hope this helps!

There is some sort of adapter you can get to use the stock hu for an amp but the sound quality sucks from what i hear. There are no preamp outputs on the back of the stock unit.
Upgrading the door speakers shouldn't be a problem though.

Here I am to save the day!!!! jk

Alrighty her are the mods:
Headunit: Stock w/ Uconnect (Wanted to keep it that way)
Speakers and all new wires: 4x Polk Audio Dxi650
Amp: Rockford Fosgate 4chx75watts @4ohms
Lineout: Audio Control Lc6i

I lost no quality and actually gained quality. If you want it done right just get the Lc6i. I did plenty of research and found no bad reviews on it. It will allow for 6 output channels to any type of amp/amps. Very simple install, just a matter of finding out which wires were the speaker output on the stock radio wire and positive/negative. I go my Lc6i for $100 on eBay, normally about $140. If you have any questions shoot me a PM. It was a lot of trial and error but this was not my first decent setup, and everything worked when powered up the first time

I have changed out all 6 speakers and added a kicker amp w/ sub. Originally I ran the sub and amp with a LOC and had no issues. When I did the speakers I also changed the deck to get a DVD player with blue tooth. I liked the stock deck but lacked the features I wanted for tuning my system as my speakers are not amplified so I had to adjust them with the deck. If you get the right equipment and plan it out you can have a great system with factory looks. I have an install thread on another forum but not on here. I with locate it for you. If you have questions just ask. Also with the speakers they make a plug adapter for adding aftermarket speakers with no cutting of the wires.

If you could locate it then that would be great!

What I am ideally looking for is a way to keep the stock head unit but upgrade speakers first off. Then if it is possible, without compromising the cars electronics at all, add an amp and finally a subwoofer. In that order of priority.

If you are just upgrading speakers you don't need to change the head unit. Adding an amp is where it gets tricky because there are no "Amp Outs" on the factory head unit. You would have to get something like a PAC Converter (cheap but works) or the Audio Control Lc6i (expensive but way better then the PAC). You could also look into getting something like the LOCKPICK which has a lot of really cool features and it has a harness that will allow you to add an amp with the need for the PAC or other add on. http://www.coastaletech.com/MYGIG.htm

So am I reading right that if we can connect a Lc6i or similar to the stock head unit, we can then run the amp and sub from that?

From this there should be little risk to affecting things like the steering wheel controls etc?

Is the biggest concern then where to run the wiring?

Is there anything I'm missing at all?

No need to worry about any electrical issues. Nothing will be compromised if wires are run properly. The Lc6i only needs input from the front and rear speakers and will output to RCA for 6 channels, basically giving you the 4 door speakers and a sub amp. If you are running low wattage for the door speakers possibly 50 or less then you shouldnt have to run new wires, I'm running almost 75watts per speaker so I had to run new wire and not fry the stock ones. Not always necessary but to receive the best quality it's worth the headache. Easy peasy Japaneasy.

Any suggestions on what to run in Terms of amp or sub wattage? This is all helpful! Appreciate it.

if you want a sub and speakers you might look at some 5ch amp options. It allows you to run all 4 speakers and then a decent size sub for some bass. If you want some crazy bass then go with a 4ch amp for speakers and a mono (1ch) for a sub, or even a 4ch amp and a powered sub. There are a few options out there just a matter of budget and what you want more.

I have a kicker 300/1 amp in my cargo area and a pioneer 12" against the rear seat. The combo is great and amazingly powerful. Here is the sub I use http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_120 ... WX310.html I have it facing my seat so it takes up almost no cargo area. Also here is the link to my install thread. Not the most detailed but it shows you what I did. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f292/ste ... d-1325064/.
