Hello everyone I see that people are getting better gas mileage than me but I don't know where to really begin, for example if I get a chip do I need a cool air intake plus a new exhaust. Please help ![]() Chip or Programer Intakes (Stock Box but new filter or cold air) Exhaust And so on. Thanks, JeepMonkey190 |

The following is courtesy of Jeepkj02. Ways to Improve Your Gas Mileage: Switch to synthetic oils. Add fuel injector cleaner, or have a shop clean your injectors with a machine. After filling up make sure your gas cap is on securely (3 clicks). Avoid traffic areas. When you idle you get 0 mpg. Buy gasoline at the coldest time of the day (early morning or late evening). During these times gasoline is densest. Keep in mind that gas pumps measure volumes of gasoline, not densities of fuel concentration. You are charged according to volume of measurement. Avoid “jackrabbit starts”. When accelerating from a dead stop try to keep your tachometer as low as possible. Traveling under 55 mph produces up to 21% better mileage. Driving 65 mph on the highway will improve your mileage compared to 70-80 mph. Use cruise control like your addicted to it. The more constant your speed is and the less your transmission shifts between gears, the better gas mileage you get. Do not accelerate while going uphill. Accelerate before a hill and coast while going uphill. When going downhill, there is no need to accelerate, if you coast you will get better mileage. Avoid prolonged idling. You only need 30-45 seconds to warm up an engine, even during the cold winters. I’m not sure, but it maybe different on a diesel. If you plan on idling your Jeep for more than one minute, it is better to turn off the engine. Stoplights are timed. So if you go the speed limit, you can go through green lights. The less you brake/stop/idle the better your gas mileage will be. Do regular maintenance and tune-ups. Follow your manual (Schedule B). Change spark plugs, all your oils (motor, transmission, t-case, front diff, rear diff), antifreeze, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, etc… A low-charged battery will decrease your gas mileage during startup, so check your battery. Try aftermarket performance products such as mufflers or hi-flow exhaust or an cold air intake (K&N, AirRaid, etc..) and try keeping your heavy right foot off that skinny pedal. Inflate your tires. It is recommended to inflate your tires to about 33-35 psi on a cold tire. Check this as much as possible and add air if needed. A underinflated tire can reduce mileage by 25%. Nitrogen filled tires does not help you increase your mileage, it only holds the "air" in more, so if you check your tires regularly you should have no problem. Make sure your tires are properly balanced and your suspension is aligned to factory specs. Remove excess weight on or in your Jeep. Remove all the snow on your Jeep during the winter. Avoid using your air conditioning and heater. Running your a/c can reduce your mileage by 10-20%. Under 40 mph, it is better to open your windows than to run your a/c. Combine all your errands into one trip. When going to work or school try carpooling and make your co-workers/friends chip in for the gas money. Following this list can makeup for all the mpg's you lost by adding those bigger tires, lift and roof rack. If anyone would like to add to this list it post it here and I be happy to add it. |

One of my favorite mods is my ecometer. Plugs right into the OBDll port and shows you your gas mileage by instant or average. The best way to get the best mileage in a Liberty is to try and stay in overdrive whenever possible. The winter is the hardest time to get good gas mileage. Check your tire pressure. I'd recommend my mods (check out my sig) but they all cost $$$. Coast to stop signs and red lights. If you're familiar with an area it should be rather easy to not have to come to a complete stop at a red light if you time it right. Do you have any mods yet that might change your mileage? Keep in mind the ever popular bigger tires are a sure way to DECREASE your mileage. Same thing goes for roof racks and anything else that would increase drag or add weight to the vehicle. I'm pretty proud of my gas mileage. Had my Libby for a year now. Spring, Summer, and Fall I constantly get 20 or more m.p.g. CITY and about 22 or more highway. Those number decrease about 2 mpg during the colder months. |

I'm running 247/75 and my gas mileage has dropped a good bit with the lift and tires. What are you guys doing to help counter this ? Speedo, gears? |

You've got me a little confused on that one. 2wd I thought only power is put to the rear wheel(s)? Also keep in mine the mileage is probably even better than you think because my driving consists of very short trips. My commute to work is less than two miles and a there are two possible traffic lights I may or may not hit. It's probably the programmer, but could also be the combo of that paired with the exhaust and CAI and the fact that I'm a "hypermiler" so I'm concerned every single second of driving in order to get the best possible mileage. A bit of coasting goes a long way. Your right foot is your enemy, but also applying the brakes too early is one of the worst things you can do. |

The power is put to the rear in 2wd but the front stuff drags. Back in the day, there were locking hubs which allowed the front axel to be disconnected allowing the front wheels to freewheel. |

Proper gearing etc and what you say decreases mileage will not With roof rack , steel bumpers, 32 inch tires etc with 4.10s I can pull down 21.5 -22 on the highway easy Short trips is the worst for mileage since the vehicle never has a chance to get up to operating temps |
