My new battery is randomly draining when the vehicle is parked. After letting the Jeep sit for an hour, I've used a clamp-on DC amp meter and determined by pulling fuses one by one that circuit M13 - Ignition Off Draw containing Cabin Compartment Node, Wireless Control Module, Clock and Multifunction Control Switch is the culprit. It's drawing about .8 amps. When I pull that fuse, the current out of the battery drops to a few milliamps. Any thoughts before I waste a morning at the dealer?

You need to drive it to charge it. Does it get driven often?

Clarifying: When the Jeep is parked overnight, the battery is randomly draining. I've trouble shot the problem to circuit M13 (Ignition Off Draw) that is drawing 800 milliamps. Many things are attached to that circuit and something is not turning itself off. There are no mods or customer installations. Anyone else have a phantom drain issue?

There was a KA owner with this issue. Turned out to be his trailer charging system would "leak".
The IOD fuse is the one the dealers pull if a rig is going to sit for a while to prevent battery drain. But it should not drain the battery over night. Something inside is not shutting down correctly, or a light is stuck on. It may take a while to figure out because it is intermittent. Park the rig and go back out and listen for something running, also feel around because you should be able to feel heat from what is drawing current.

Good advice Scar0. How many miles on the Liberty?

The Liberty has 14,000 miles. There are 3 Ignition Off Draw circuits - a 10 A fuse, a 20 A and then the one you pull for storage is a 60 A breaker. It's the 20 A that has the .8A "leak." I've sat in the vehicle listening and looking and came up with nothing. It could be the radio or an actuator or even part of the computer that's drawing the 10 watts. I'll mess around a little more this week and get it to the dealer next week if I have to.

My bet is the Sentry Key security/WCM module.

The M13 fuse sends power the the WCM, Instrument cluster, and the steering control module.

What about the fuse or something associated with the backup sensors if equipped with that option?

I know this may also sound a little strange, but I would have the battery load tested on the off chance that you have a dead cell...

A dead cell wouldn't likely lead to an 800 milliamp load on the battery with the ignition off.

A new observation: In total darkness, I could see a very very faint glowing red from the blueish green digital displays (Are they vacuum florescent?) I think I found my 10 watt load. I'll report back after the dealer looks at it and tells me there's no problem.

I doubt that they are VFDs. Most likely LED and you are just seeing a reflection off of a green filter. I could be wrong though

It is a VFD display...

With a little research I found out the glowing red I'm seeing are actually filaments...after all, they are vacuum tubes, sort of. VFDs use filaments that are kept just below incandescence but can be seen in total darkness. I was looking for something dissipating 10 watts and I think I found the two, five watt culprits. I made an appointment for Wednesday morning and will let you know.

Does anyone know what contsole discovered was the cause of his battery drain? I am experiencing a similar prob with my wife's 2012 Liberty. Appreciate all responses/assistance.

I spent several days at the dealer and they were never able to solve the issue. Part of their problem was disconnecting the battery as part of their test. This caused all kinds of resetting and recycling and even after they let the car sit overnight, they wouldn't see the problem. The electrical guy they had on it gave me an idea. He said a previous power-draw gremlin he tracked down was related to the slightest amount of rust on a brake light connection. The corrosion was causing noise and retries on the vehicle's communication network (CANbus). When there is noise or an unexpected condition, the computer never goes to sleep and continues to draw power.

I chewed on that for a while and didn't come up with anything. One cold day driving to work I turned on the vent and expected cold air but it was only cool. The temp setting was fully CCW so I knew there was a problem. The motor/positioner (on circuit M13 - see first post) that moves the mixing damper is near the driver's right foot. I removed it and made it move back and forth a couple dozen times and I used a some pliers and moved the damper back and forth a number of times. It may have been sticking a little, not sure because it's harder to move than expected. The damper only has about 90 degrees of movement while the motor has 180 degrees of movement. When the battery is removed and reconnected, the computer orders the motor to perform a crude calibration routine by moving from end to end. There is no position feedback so it probably looks at stall current for the end points and uses time-on as a estimate of position.

I believe what was happening is the damper motor was unable to position the damper as commanded and the computer never went to sleep because it saw an unexpected condition. I never would have been able to trouble shoot this without a DC clamp-on ammeter. The repair technician at the dealer even bought one just like mine after he saw it and realized the value. After re-attaching the motor, the problem never returned.

Postscript: Every time you touch something, even the door light switch, it wakes up the computer and takes between 8 and 15 minutes to go completely back to sleep. It's maddening to troubleshoot. The faint glowing of the VFD dash display I saw in post 10 also disappeared once the sticking damper was addressed.

Wow what a PIA. Well done on figuring it out, and also for getting back to us with the cause.
Something to file away just in case...
