Post subject:  INTEREST FOR ROOF RACKS/ Side bars available now too!

Some of you may have seen my new roof rack I posted a few weeks ago. I want to see if there is enough interest in these to start producing them. The way mine is built, it is not shippable through ups or usps, only freight which would be very expensive. It is because of the size, and there is no way I can cut the size down to be fully welded and shippable. I have however come up with a way to make it assembled by the user. It would still be very strong and look good. The five crossbars would use a sleeved system that uses a bolt and welded nut as a set screw. It would also get four light tabs up front and two in the back. The side rails would be 1.32" OD x .130 wall tube and the cross bars would be 1" OD x 0.095" wall tube. Very very strong, much stronger than the factory rails.
This is just a model to illustrate how the joints would look. Ignore the tacked together and un notched tube joint. The part that is just tacked together would be fulky welded

It would replace these welded crossbar joints.

The rack itself would look similar to this.

I really only need a couple orders to get this started. I am now asking for a small deposit on orders because of a few people flaking after I bought material and started their order. If you are SERIOUS about ordering one, send me a pm.

To make things easier, they are priced with shipping included to the lower 48.
Price is $325 shipped for the first five.
Deposit is $50

Feel free to post any questions

Will it fit the KJ? Also are you just gonna sell the side rails alone?

I don't think they'd fit a kj, unless the roof studs are the same. Yes I can sell the side rails by themselves too!

Before it goes further, it will not fit a KJ

With the slip fit connection how are you going to address the rust issue ? Just curious

Paint it or have it powder coated. Why do you think there would rust issues with a sleeve connection?

Any time you have an area like that it will rust, vibration/wear/ etc will all make that area move some which no matter if painted/powder coated whatever you use it will rust.
If you look at your cheaper racks that are made that way for shipping within a year or so there is rust coming out of the sleeved areas
Just an observation and also from experience

I can't see it being a problem. The set screw will hold the crossbars nice and tight. They would be 5/16" grade 8s so they can be wrenched down. If it was a concern to the user they could put a bead of silicone around it to keep water out. If it ever did rust the tube is much heavier walled than those cheap racks so if any rust did appear just sand it away and recoat. It would take a long long long time for it to rust through and become trash.

Any difference in price for just the side rails?

just trying to help with some suggestions
Not saying it will rust through, but moisture will collect and it will come out
But whatever,

Side rails only would be $185 shipped with no nuts & bare steel. The nuts are m6-1 and are cheap at the hardware store. I'd run some nylon washers under the feet to keep it off the body.

Of course if anyone wanted a fully welded one i'm in Northern California just come by and have it installed. Seems like 90% of you guys are in the northeast more specifically New Jersey. :ALONE:

After thinking about Mudd's concern about the rust and researching what he is talking about I've decided to put this off and build a tester to run for a while. I've worked my butt off to keep a good reputation and build you guys quality stuff while keeping promise on the lead times. I would hate to be wrong and you guys get something sub par. Give me a while and I'll report back.

In the mean time, yes I can and will make side rails if you want them. The bends are are easy and assembly is pretty simple once I get a fixture. Just send me a pm, at this time I don't have any orders so I'm wide open. Again those would be $185 shipped without nuts and bare steel. The reason for no nuts is they would only cost you like $4 at the hardware store and some of you might just reuse the factory side rail nuts like I did.

I would love to see what you can do with those rock rails.

185$? That's a very affordable price compared to Jrc's and RockyRoad's rails.

Yes please don't confuse these with rock sliders. They are roof side rails to replace the factory side rails or a add side rails to kk's that didn't come with them.

Atthehelm, I might take you up on the side rails. Granted it's going to be in some time since I just ordered my lift and will be getting new tires as soon as the lift is installed. Great thing is your prices are amazing. Hopefully by the end of the summer I can jump on those.

Ohhh then I was confused :banghead: :banghead:

Well, you should weld some rock sliders too  . I bet you'll do a great job.

Got a prototype done today as well as a welding fixture. With everything bolted down this thing is rock solid.

Only half welded to check fitment. Installation is way easier than I thought it would be.
