Hi All,
I am getting a bad hot smell, like burning plastic but not quite, from the engine bay. It happens only when starting up the Jeep, and then only when the engine is already hot. Tonight I stopped for gas, then when I turned the Jeep back on I got a strong wave of hot burning smell through the blower. I stopped the vehicle, popped the hood, and I could smell it under there pretty strong. But the smell was gone by the time I got home (1 mile away). I let it idle for 15 minutes while getting pizza and it didn't return.

Two weeks ago the Jeep had the same problem and brought it into the shop for my mechanic to look at. He found the front crankshaft seal was leaking oil, and replaced it. No hot smell for about 10 days, now it is back. Thoughts? Anyone have this happen before?

Thanks,
LFH

what Carlos said...look at your drive belt. Look for anything different with it to include "significant wear/shiny" points on the belt. If not, then check around your engine for any potential wires/wire looms being burned.

Thanks guys, I'll check the drive belt tomorrow, and look for any melted wiring harnesses.

I had that once and it turned out to be one of those plastic bags that I had run over and it stuck to the catalytic converter.
