Just wondering if anyone here has looked into mounting a winch behind the plastic OEM bumper where the license plate is normally mounted. Is there enough room in there to mount a winch with a cutout on the front?

It would stick out and above the oem bumper and you'd definitely have to cut out the plastic. The detours mount basically does what you're talking about.

I was thinking just directly mounting it to the front of the bumper.

Ahh. It'd tear off?

Edit: just to be clear, I'm talking about cutting out a hole and mounting the winch behind the plastic directly on the metal of the actual bumper. Not on the plastic cover.

I figured you were talking about the cross member. Your ultimate goal would be do able but you'd have to build a cradle or mount for it that spreads the load out. Bolted locations would include the unibody rail openings (tow hook holes) plus a couple others. When all is said and done figuring materials and labor you might be better off getting a Detours mount or my front receiver system and using a receiver mounted winch.

First there is not that much room in behind the bumper for a winch etc
Second if done it would be real low and would be in the water if doing any stream crossings etc

Not sure why you want a hidden winch
You need to see how the cable or rope is rolling back on the reel which you can't when they are hidden like that. Having a cable get spooled on wrong is not good for the cable and future use
Plus hanging so low they'll catch all of the road crap and water/mud etc off road
Something like the detours is way better setup

Tom

all your point a more that correct and I agree with you. Sadly over here in Europe, it's getting harder to put a winch at the front with the new legistlation. Specially on Offroads after 2008, therefore there are now a lot more conversions to hide them away with in the body of the offroad, see photo above. Result is that not always they are positioned in the best place.

I am having a hard time finding the topic on JF but there is a shop in Germany or France that makes a mount for a wench behind the bumper of a WJ but you need to cut out the crossmember to mount it

If you have some fab skills you could build something like this

Just for reference, the reason that I was thinking about doing this is that I saw a picture of a Chevy S10 with a winch inside the bumper. I liked the look, with the winch rollers just sitting inline with the bumper, so I was thinking about aping it with a custom setup.

However, after looking into it more (and with help from you guys) I think that it would be more work than it's worth. I suspect I would be better off with something like the Detours backbone and just plunking the winch on top of the bumper. As tommud noted it would be more likely to be out of the water that way.

Ugh. I need to go rob a bank or something to afford all this gear! :-)r
