Post subject:  Hot smell from A/C???

So a guy I work with asked me about a month ago if I have ever had a hot/burning smell come from my vents when I first start up my KK. At the time I didn't and the dealer he just bought his used KK from could not figure out where it was coming from. Well I too now have a hot burning smell from my vents when the fan first kicks in. It kind of smells like burning electrical but not as strong. Only happens for a couple of seconds when you first turn on the AC or vet fan. Any ideas?? I'm thinking th actuator that opens the damper behind the glove box. Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks

Do you have all your fan speeds? In my XJ a similar burning smell happened just before my blower motor resistor bit the dust.

It didn't look like too many people had some ideas of what this would be from. But I'll update in case it helps someone else.

The guy I work with never was able to determind what the smell was coming from, neither could the dealership. So they swapped him out with a newer KK.

As for mine.... I have all fan speeds and have removed the resistor and blower and cleaned off the dust. They didn't smell "hot" when I removed them, and the dust didn't really smell either. I don't have a cabin air filter so my plan is to instal one using the write up on here and when it's all opened up inspect the actuators and clean all the ducts.

The cabin air filter mod is well worth it. And the write up by MtnLuvr is right on. I performed that mod myself about 2 years ago and am glad I did.

As to the smell, I have another idea. The blower sucks in outside air pretty efficiently, including smells. Recently I had the front crankshaft seal go, and when I started the Jeep up it would sling oil around. Some drops would land on the exhaust manifold and promptly burn up, creating a nasty smell. This only happened on startup, and then again it only made the smell if the engine was already hot.
