Post subject:  Prob after OME lift

Just lifted my 08 KK with OME springs and Rancho shocks. I'm getting a noise from the front drivers side that sounds similar to the brake dust shield rubbing on the rotor. Somewhere between that and a bag full of ball bearings. It is def not the brake shield because the noise is there with the rotor removed when you spin the hub by hand. Th CV boots look good and I can't really feel the noise through the boot, it seem like its somewhere in the knuckle.

Could it be a wheel bearing? Could something we did during the lift cause a bearing to fail, or make an existing problem worse? I'm most likely going to take it to a shop tomorrow late afternoon, any ideas?

Ryan

edited to add that the noise is the same whether braking or accelerating, and turning doesn't seem to make any diff. Only happens once above 5 mph or so but once it starts its there till the car stops. Also it's worse when going forward than reverse.

Checked to make sure the caliper was bolted back on right ?
Did you have noise at all before ?
How many miles on the KK?
Of course once you lift one you have changed the angles on everything so I'd go back over everything you did and check to make sure its all tight.
I assume you have already had it aligned ?

Didn't take the caliper off the first time, but did make sure it was secure after removing it to check the brake shield. I cannot find anywhere the rust is disturbed as if it's been rubbing.

No noise before.

41000 miles.

I checked everything twice before putting it back on the ground.

No alignment yet, it's not drivable the way it sits now. The noise is loud, as in I felt bad test driving it on a residential street at 10pm loud.

Thank for the help!

The noise stayed the same in 2wd or 4wd. I only engaged 4wd for 100' or so to see what would happen and it didn't change at all.

When spinning the hub it feels as if the noise is coming from inside the knuckle itself.

Did you notice if the center of the wheel was hot after the test drive?
Did you tighten everything when it was on the ground?

I didnt ck the center of the wheel, not really a test drive bc the noise is quite loud so I didnt want to push my luck and do more damage.

I was going to tighten everthing after the test ride, so no I didn't. Don't know that it would matter though in this case. With the jeep off the ground, tire/caliper/rotor removed I can spin the hub by hand and it makes the noise. Worse foward than backward. So the noise is there without the weight of the jeep on it.

Really appreciate the help. I'm thinking that the wheel bearing doo doo the bed at some point as I was moving the knuckle. The noise def is coming from the hub.

My suggestion is to pull that wheel back off, go back over each thing you had loose, check make sure they are tight and then see what happens. Plus not knowing what all you had loose kind of hard to tell what maybe the issue.
If though you are having rotational noise with the caliper off then that leads to something possibly with the CV
Only things you need to tighten after its on the ground are the sway bar links and the Upper control arm bolts ( if you replaced them) everything else tighten

X2. Seems like a good amount of KK's have had a pair of wheel bearings go on them.

Thank you for the reply. I had loose the upper and lower clevis bolts, lower sway bar link, upper ball joint, and the 4 top bolts. I replaced the factory coil over shock with OME springs and rancho shocks. I did have the wheel back off and rechecked everthing I touched. I do not think that it is a loose bolt bc it does it when I spin the hub by hand with no stress on the suspension.

I'm leaning towards unit bearing bc when I spin the hub with my hand on the cv boot I couldn't feel the noise, it definitely seems to be coming from the hub. Also the noise was the same when I breifly tried 4wd, and didn't change when I turned the wheel left or right.

If the cv was making the noise would the noise change in 4wd or when I turn the wheel?

Turns out I'm a moron.

Went to take the Jeep to the shop a few block away from where I was doing the work. Got about halfway there and hit a medium sized pothole, going about 15 and was scared I was gonna lose the hub/bearing or something. Soon as I hit the bump the noise stopped and I hear something hit the road, looked in the mirror and thought it was a lug nut. At this point the noise is completely gone as I pulled over. Walked back to what fell and what was it?

I spread open the upper clevis by reversing the bolt and blocking the hole with a 1/2 inch extension, and there it was on the road lol. Apparently at some point in the assembly process it fell between the part of the hub that rotates and the part that attaches to the knuckle. Was wedged in there just tight enough that it took a bump to knock it out, and almost impossible to see especially at night.

The Jeep ride friggin awesome now and is a completely different truck. Wish I'd have done the lift sooner and anyone considering it should go for it! Only problem is 245/70/16 looks small now lol.

Thank you all for your help!
