Post subject:  weird vibration/thump.....

Just left my local tire shop for a second time in a few days. for the past thousand miles or so I have noticed a weird vibration. Sounds like a weird thump in the tire. I took it to a local tire shop where I got my firestone destinations to have them checked out. They said the tires are cupped which I saw for myself (my fault for waiting to long to rotate) when they mounted my MOAB replicas I thought a simple rotation would fix this. They said it may or may not. Since I had road hazard they gave me new tires. I had a small small fee to pay. Needles to say the vibration is still there. its intermitted and something I have never felt before in any vehicle. I am just still under warranty so I hope non of my mods have caused the failure.

anything I should peek my head under the vehicle to look at? I thought maybe wheel bearings but I don't hear a growl or woosh type of sound. any tips on things I can check would be great!

When my right CV/intermediate shaft was on the way out, it began by sounding and feeling like a tire was out of balance. Later, it became a more noticeable thumping at high speeds, and eventually it even made noise in town at low speeds. At that point I changed it. Here is my thread, so you can read through it and see if it sounds like your problem. It also details the things I checked to narrow down the issue.

yes sounds like this is a similar issue, I was starting to think its a cv or U joint sound since it sounds rotational. hopefully it will be covered under warranty when I take it in tomorrow.

When I had my hubs replaced they were loud around 30 mph and got quieter as I went faster. The first shop wasn't too sure what it was, but the dealer did...

Well the dealer claims theres metal on metal clunking from the lift, he tried to say the braket and spring touch...the only thing i can thing of is hes saying the JBA UCA is touching my spring at full droop, well the issue is on flat ground smooth driving, not flexing....ughhh :banghead: anyone know of a place or dealer in MD i can take this too......at this point i dont care if its under warranty or not. i just want it fixed, I am afraid to drive it incase i break it and it laves me stranded!

Can you take a picture of the way it sits and post it? Perhaps from several angles. I bet we could help you diagnose it if we could see it.

I had the same problem, turned out that the intermediate shaft wouldn't let go of the axle.

Dealers suck. I couldn't get them to take an honest look at it, even if I paid them. Another thing to try would be a load force balance.

vibration is still there. my strut slipped down in the clevis and the dealer would not fix. my buddy did it for me in like 5 min. but alas the noise is still there. I will have a non dealer look at it in the am. are CV's and intermediate shafts covered under the 100k/5 year drivetrain warranty?

Well the vibration is all the time now. I think it may be the tq converter because the vibration feels like it's in the trans tunnel. Do KK liberty have converter issues like other jeeps?? The dealer told me if it is the tq converter my tires might have caused it and may not be covered under warranty

ok so I noticed where my CV meets the intermediate shaft there is some play. not much but enough to move maybe an 1/8 of an inch or 1/4 maybe. is this normal?

In and out is probably ok but up and down should be looked at. If you can move the big part of the cv shaft on an angle then the splines are probably broken.

yes this is up and down play. I can grab the large end of the CV and move it up and down

You should pull it and check the splines.

goin to drop it off now, the car is still under warranty. I am under 36k and this should be under the 100k drive train warranty

update

tech and the shop foreman went for a drive, when they came back they THINK it may be a wheel bearing. The wheel bearing has no play but they say that doesn't mean its not bad......I brought up the play in the CV/intermediate shaft and the tech said they all have that......

the wheel bearing will be under B to B warranty but I thought the wheel bearing are under drivetrain warranty correct? I don't think they will get it right :banghead:

Post subject:  Re: weird vibration/thump.....

well dealer thinks its the passenger axle....I knew that play wasn't good.

They ran it through jeep drivetrain warranty, and was denied because of my lift. I was told the tech even told DCX warranty that my cv angles are not even drastic but supposedly DCX said if it is lifted then warranty will not cover it. they want 560 to parts and labor for the axle. my thing is I know it will be more because to me it looks like the intermediate shaft is moving and that bearing around that shaft is shot....

suggestions?

Post subject:  Re: weird vibration/thump.....

I found a low mileage CV and intermediate shaft on http://www.car-part.com for $50 and had my local shop install it for $100. If you have the tools to install it yourself, it could be very inexpensive.
